A Poem by CookeCody

Something

I may be wrong, but I believe people nowadays are trying too hard to aim themselves toward another person, and I include myself in this. What I mean is this-I think that when we move forward or evaluate ourselves or do anything, we do so in terms of another character, real or fictional. This can be good sometimes because it sparks a desire to be better than how you are, but sometimes believing you're not good enough because of someone else is just as harmful as it can be beneficial. We should always strive forward or upward or towards whatever direction is our own individual better, I believe in that, but I believe our motives to do so should be to become better than we used to be, not to be as good as a role model. When we compare ourselves to anything or anyone, we're taking away our own uniqueness. So when my friends are constantly saying that their own reactions or personalities or beliefs or abilities are the same as another's, I can't help but think and worry and think more and worry more because of my thinking. I wonder if a person were raised from infancy, were to never have contact with another inferior nor superior person or image, were to for its entire life believe that his or her own person is the only person he or she needs to concern themselves with, I wonder what this person would think, would say, would do in our own societal situations. If I have lived my life up to this moment believing that I must be better for the sake of or in spite of or in comparison to someone else, I hope that from now on I push myself to better myself for the sole reason of being a better me. There must be some people in the world who already live like this, and I'd be confident in betting that they're the happy ones.
