LeviathanA Poem by Briana Noël ManzanoTake a look At the inside of my cheeks: They’re scarred and torn From the clenching and gnashing of teeth. Chewed tissue hangs like the tattered sail Of the shipwreck that is my mouth. And its skeleton crew, Half buried but still grinding against one another, Their bones pressed up against the bow, Desperately trying to escape the bitter sea That’s slowly flooding this giant coffin. They tear up their pirate’s flag frantically In spite of their marauding hearts; Betraying everything that they are, Opening their mouths To scream at the top of their lungs, “Please! I surrender.” Just as the murky depths rise To fill their throats with a burning hopelessness, To pour into every orifice the heaviness of indifference, Reducing their cries to soft gurgles, Swaddling their corpses in sour brine, Skeletons suspended, Forgotten. And the slumbering Leviathan below Awakens And swallows up the entire ocean, Growing and growing Until it begins to choke on itself, Lungs suffocated by its own weight. Growing, Until it smothers the whole world With its bitter loathing.
