Stranger in the StreetA Poem by Cass Ashe
I took a stroll in the streets today
and found the loneliest person amidst many who stood and watched the world as it passed indifferently around him. His eyes were tired and his expression hung low with a longing look in the distance but I could tell that he saw nothing when he snapped back to the real world. Maybe he longed for love and joy or could it be a shoulder to lean on. I "dropped" my bag next to his space, papers and cocoa strewn all about the ground but he offered a kind smile and bent down, helping me to gather my belongings. His eyes shone for a brief second with a peculiar vision deep in his pupils where I saw emerging from the black depths a precisely made mirror image of me. I saw me in all I saw in him, the lonesome little child learning the world but never was taught to navigate the seas or traverse the ancient customs of life. We went and I bought him a hot cocoa and was bound to leave in a rush until a peculiar feeling rushed over me, that I stayed and took a seat with the stranger. I really felt I never even left home with him especially when I was very busy cleaning all of the paper and three cups of hot cocoa that I spilled in front of the bathroom mirror. © 2023 Cass AsheReviews
