The Truth and Reasons to FightA Poem by Allegra Patkos
There's a void in the stomach of the greatest machine
And the only thing to fill it is the light of kerosene In the cavern of the night I screamed Lord make it light If the walls crumble in I'll go down without a fight I gave it away at the start of the game, I walked through your doors without stating my name How could the past have moved along so fast I never gave it a thought, I never would've asked How it was so, that the wise elders know When the river weeps and why it would flow I should have listened but decided to be distant Hiding behind the guise of a faraway vision Of love between lies and the poet that dies Right between the lines of his very own sighs How could the protagonist be beat at his own game How could the admirer get all the blame For something not even a lier would give The truth about heaven and a chance to live Without any fear of the dark held so dear Without the promise lurking of a benighted affair Oh I've got the truth and I have a reason to fight I've stated my name and I've lived through the night I've listened to the elders and I've fought through the plight Of life's greatest harm oh I'll kick and I'll bite I'll keep living on till my knuckles turn white
