Stepping Stones

Stepping Stones

A Poem by Comatose

Carefully treading
On small stepping stones.
Trying, trying, trying

Endlessly to get to the other side
Of the rushing river.

I don't want to get swept away
Like so many others before me.
Trying to get to that promised land
Waiting just beyond their reach.

Stop to catch my breath and look ahead.
I see you
Your eyes dancing,

Your smile loving.
I see you

As you reach your hand towards me,

Encouraging me on.

I smile back, knowing I need to keep going,
To make it to the end.
But you always seem to be

Just one step ahead,
Just one second faster.

Eventually I'll get there
Wait and see.
We'll smile together; side by side.
Once I cross
These stepping stones.
