The Mask

The Mask

We all have our Masks...

The Mask
A Poem by Colton Warr

Tell me, if you could,
What can you hide behind your mask?
What treacherous thoughts, what eroding emotion.
I will answer, but only because you ask

I'll tell you, because I can
A divided family, a questionable love
A decision made to leave a perfect girl
An innocent mirage that I cannot get out of

I'll tell you, because I can
New beginnings and abrupt endings
A phantom haunting my heart and soul
My god, where am I heading?

I'll tell you, because I can
Am I the one doing the marooning, or am I being marooned?
Pushing and pulling at my own pleasure
Can't you taste my wound?

I'll tell you, because I can
I love my family, I hate my true love
Or perhaps did I confuse the two?
Can't you tell, I am such the wholesome Dove?

I'll tell you, because I can
Have I gone too far, should I be caged alone?
I deserve to be by myself
Forever destined to aimlessly roam

I'll tell you, because I can
What damnation awaits me, you politely ask
But perhaps it is you that should decide
Am I the one wearing a Mask?

Yes...and even world doesnt want to look beyond our masks....
This is not just in question-answer format;, rather it depicts the darkest feelings and traits of every human being-good or bad. Yes, it is an innocent mirage that you cannot get out of.Amazing poem. Keep on writing:)

This sound like questions we all ask ourselves after we have stepped out...blundered, corrected that blunder, step out and blunder again. Do we hide behind the mask to protect ourselves or other people? The older we get, the more we tend to rehash the missteps of our lives. Sadly it does no good as we cannot change the past. Very thought provoking write. Valentine

I think everyone wears a mask at some point in their life, whether it be a full faced mask, or partial mask, we all want to hide something.
Very expressive and emotional poem. It was honest and raw, shows what hides behind a lot of masks.

I enjoyed. It reminded me of Billy Joel's The Stranger. I'm not much of a masquerader I'm afraid...I'm more of a "what you see is what you get" sort. Some love me...some hate me...but damn few are on the fence. I feel like Winston Churchill when he said, "If you have made enemies, that is good, it means that at least once in your life you have taken a stand for something." I'd make a lousy liar anyway...I'm too old. I'd forget what I told to whom. So I'll just stick to my version of the truth. Keep up the good work!

Thank you, Richie! I'm glad you liked this one! Thanks for giving it a read!
Very well versed Colton, I embrace this style of writing format for I have
Done a few in the past it's more on the story telling side than just sharing
Experiences or emotions being expressed. The repetition of that line is
Supported strongly each stanza, to set up that so called unmasking in the
End. We all ware a Mask from time to Time for reasons needs no explaining,

I sincerely enjoyed this poem, and I think it's because it's so relatable. We all have a front, a person we project - good or bad. And we all use our masks in different ways - to hide, to protect, to pretend. I really am not a poem person, but I loved this. Anything thought-provoking is right up my alley and I loved the introspection that this brought about. Thanks for sharing!

I enjoy the concept of people using masks to hide something, but I don't believe anything can stay hidden because the person under the mask always knows the truth. Still, very interesting style. Good job :)
