My Name.A Story by I Are Ishmael. It's a vignette we were asked to do for English 9. I liked mines, so I thought I would put it up for constructive criticism about it before I handed it in. Enjoy. (:My name is unique.
It's used in many countires. It reminds me of the sea, of salt water and the sun beating down on hundreds of people who will soon be lobsters.
My name is a mixture. Maria and Ana.
My name was supposed to be Jessica. Sometimes, I wish it was.
In Brasil, this name flows, easily said and recognized. Here, my name becomes MaryAnne, Marion, and every other combination of letters. Everything, except for my actual name. It's clumsy, like me.
My name is my own. I love it, and I hate it. Naturally.
I wouldn't like a new name, but if I had to choose, it would probably be something like my sister's name. Melissa. It's breezy, easily said in all languages, never to be mistaken. It has poise. Mariana is clunky.
But you know what? Clunky is just my style.
So I'll stick with my name, I think. So when I say it, I'll remember this, and I'll remember beaches, and waves, and clumsiness.
Because that's just who I am, and what my name means to me. © 2010 I Are Ishmael.Author's Note
