Death's Reflection

Death's Reflection

A Poem by Collin Hinds
"

A grim encounter with a mirror.

"

I looked eye-locked with death today.
This is what I happened to see:
An unnervingly odd being
that looked exactly like me.

Allergy-red eyes,
caterpillar brows,
a crooked nose;
mid-life jowls.

Receding hair line,
gangly front teeth,
gray whiskers,
and crows’ feet.

“Screw you,” I said.

“You, too,” said Dead.

I begged, “Leave me.”

Dead said,

“When I leave you,

you do with me.
As it has ever been,
and so shall it be.”

love your wry sense of humor. this is a rarity. to laugh in death's face. the inevitability will follow but at least you told it to screw himself. and it's hilarious that dead looks exactly like you. fantastic piece.

Very cool! I see that very thing staring back at me in the mirror occasionally. I like the "screw you" line.

Death is my favorite poetic topic, and you did it justice here. We are our own best judge, our best friend, our own greatest enemy.

Most memorable lines:

"An unnervingly odd being
that looked exactly like me."
