If I Have To Marry The Duke

A Story by Nicole

Started awhile ago and just never got to far. Trying to change that. I would appreciate any type of help anyone can offer.

Prologue

"Change has a Considerable psychological impact on the human mind. To the fearful it is threatening because It means things may get worse. To the hopeful it is encouraging because things may get better. To the confidant it is inspiring because the challenge exists to make things better."

King Whitney Jr.

Thunder rumbled and snapped through the darkness like a whip. Not a sole, save for a single carriage, was out as rain poured from the sky. As the carriage raced round corner after corner down the hillside it seemed as though it would plunge it's four passengers to their deaths. Inside itself seemed like a silent tomb. A thin clean-cut woman sat next to a balding man whom constantly opened his pocket watch in the dark. Across from him sat a young boy, age 10, and next to the boy an even younger girl, age 8, each holding the others hand. Both children were pale as ghosts and sat with their backs straight as boards. With each drum of thunder and each flash of lightning the girl flinched and her brothers hand tightened around hers. Silent tears trickled down her face in fear while his face was frozen with a look of anger. Neither parent moved to comfort the poor children, but then again the children wanted no touch from either adult. Lights faintly shone out the windows as the carriage rode into a town far from the families’ home. The girls back became stiffer, if it was possible, as the sound of the rain disappeared from the roof and all movement ended save for the quick breathing of the children. A single glimpse revealed they had arrived at a building and the silence was due to the large arc of concrete that was much appreciated in the current weather. Several women dressed in white raced down the steps as the father and mother exited. This caused the children to wrap their arms around one another and hold onto each other all the tighter.

"We have brought our daughter." The mother harshly informed the oldest of the women. The girl started sobbing uncontrollably upon hearing her mother say this and tears started slipping down the boy’s cheek as well. The father stood by and watched as his wife informed the nurses of his daughter’s condition.

"Our own doctors will have to run their own tests on the girl before we can keep her here." The head nurse informed the mother. The mother nodded in understanding and told the nurse they would return in a week to find out the results. The head nurse motioned to the nurses behind her and the two women obediently stepped forward to claim the child.

"No you can not have my sister!" The boy yelled as he wrapped his arms around her. She was crying to hard to speak and if she had the chance she wouldn’t have anyways. "You can not have my sister!" The boy yelled over and over. The nurses weren’t having any luck at all removing the girl from her older, protective brother.

"For goodness sakes Samuel!" The mother screeched to the father. "Will you do something?!" She asked in annoyance. The father stepped forward and the nurses allowed him the space. The boy coward under his father’s height and seized screaming but refused to let go of his sister. It took all the strength to remove the sobbing child and he quickly handed her over to the nurse after doing so.

" A Week then." The nurse said. The mother nodded and climbed back into the carriage with the now hysterical boy and was quickly followed by the father. They would not return in a week and it would be at least 10 years before the girl saw her brother again.
