How everything started

A Chapter by Colette French

And there she is, once again, like a vulture waiting for the last dying breath of its prey. It seems like I'm the only one who has the ability to look through her. That's the exact reason why I am trying to get a hold of myself and not to tell Milo what I really think of his ex. It's difficult when she looks at him in the eye for so long, when she performs these gestures that must have made him fall so hard for her. I can't stand it any longer.

On my left I can see Lars, alone at the mini-bar as usual. Oh, he saw me approaching.

Ivy! Incredible seeing you here! I thought this little get-together kind of thing wasn't your cup of tea? He isn't cynical, but I sense underlying defiance. He pours me a glass of red as I cast a glance on my left. Milo has gone! I just turned my back on them a minute ago.

- Ivy? Is everything OK? He obviously noticed: I ignore.

- Did you mention the last time you were planning to move to London? It's not so convincing because I couldn't care less but I really have to focus on something. Hence Lars.

Each time the doubt filters in, before it starts enveloping my mind, I have to act, precise and sharp. Give back the point, so we can start all over again, both of us, equal and pure in front of our promises. Most of the time, it happens at social events. I don't like people, I don't have many friends, but I couldn't escape the parties any more. After two years public appearances are required. So that they don’t forget that Milo is engaged: not available. Lars thinks I'm listening to him because I nod here and there, but I can only see his mouth moving, his brows frowning and now, he wants me to acquiesce.

I think you’re right. By the way, don't you have someone accompanying you tonight?

- Well, the only one I have eyes for is right in front of me, honey. His smile was stupidly aggressive, but I had to ignore. Faking a laugh was way too much over my capacities, so I just pour ourselves so more wine.

- The bottle's almost finished. I'm going down to the cellar and get us something else. I'll be back in a sec, wait for me here Don Juan.”

I can even feel his eyes following me as I'm leaving, sticking to my body. God, I hate him so much. He's not a bad person; his attitude is just horribly repellent. Lars is handsome, that's true, but his mind so full of dirt. Anyone who gets to know him falls under his spell, but wait a few years and the magic has vanished.

Ivy! Thank you so much for coming, I didn't expect you to be there, it's such a surprise! Lucy's arms are folding in my back and her Lucy's deep red lipstick must be decorating my jasmine silk blouse as I'm thinking those words.

- I thought it would be a good occasion for everyone to see I'm not dead. Her laugh is out of tune.

- Come on, let's have a drink together, we never had a real chat, and you're about to marry my best friend. I think it would be appropriate to try and get to know each other much better.

She gives me the look.

I'm trapped, what am I to do?

- I'd love to but Lars is waiting for me in the lounge and we were in the middle of something, that's too bad really.” I can’t believe I’m playing her game now. Well, it’s time to grab a bottle of wine and get soaked.
