Cocoa PuffsA Poem by Colettea forlorn bond
Sweet little cocoa puffs
in a bowl of milk
situated on the countertop
waiting
for me to eat you
I hand her a pomegranate
a knife
and she obeys
I can get people to do almost anything
almost anywhere
for me
and my camera
It’s what people don’t do
that hurts us
isn’t it?
She’s got her Asian curiosities
I’ve got my African dreams
She just wants to raise her kids
with morals
values
and an education to succeed
She didn’t anticipate a friendly betrayal
or, for her hair to fall out from lost love
I did.
I’ve been through it all
She just wants someone to eat cheese with
I am perhaps too full of it
I’m just a little girl
with an old woman’s soul
All I can give is this autumn day
herbs to chew on
flowers to smell
art to admire
Perhaps with these I can obtain a small spot
in the memory of this girl
who wears her hair in cocoa puffs
to appease me
While I wear loneliness for breakfast
