Tuna Nachos

Tuna Nachos

A Poem by Colette

He said Mi Reina

and the journey began

of octopus on rice

a heat wave

a drought

work unfinished

work only just begun

a revolution

or revelation?

stories of knives in abdomens

kitchen saws

sounds, sights, smells of death

both too young to have experienced such things

and yet, this is the world people

this is the world...

consider yourself blessed if you haven’t faced these challenges

but the simple things

oh the sweet simple things

like a dog rolling on his back in the grass

a pool pony

hummingbirds and grasshoppers

a red hibiscus changing the images in the brain

from flashbacks of needles, and gunshots, and hospitals, and prisons, and...

Blood.

Blood lost.

Blood received.

Bone marrow and backaches

beaten by father

the police

lock and sock

and simply beaten down by the mere struggle for survival

We rise up like a Moonrise Kingdom awaits

Where a little boy and a little girl

Can just find some borderline happiness
