Oniomania

Your petty disguise is f*****g brillant

A little sliver of trivial indulgence in every stitch,

Engrossing little pretentious fingerprints placed over every inch,

All tided up with the most enormous scarlet bow.

You bought it from that new store downtown

A store filled with trap doors and tiny nooks.

The only way to get in was to know the secret password,

That 3 digit pin on the back of your credit card,

They always were the most selective club.

Their wardrobe is stuffed with the latest fashion,

As they hide their decrepit fabric in the alleyway.

They are just running on the friction of middle-aged wives,

Charging up their cash registers wIth every compulsory impulse,

Keeping oniomania by the seat of their pants.

I went down there one time and bought a sun hat,

One laced with gold plated ribbons

And stuffed with cardboard.

It was the phoniest piece of headwear that ever left the runway

But for some reason I felt obligated to wear it everyday.

Consumerism has been the United States definition of progress and success for a very long time!

We have a certain look that we like, we won't mind buying a sun hat laced with gold plated ribbons, we won't mind wearing it so long as we like it. It's not fashion. We are buying things for the need of it. But when we see people who lavishly follow fashion it can look a bit rubbish. I think that type of desperation is a little too sad. I think some people thought that they can buy pure happiness at Macy's.

Your poem talks about a social illness which will eat you up if you allow it to. Good job!

Ha! I loved this. When I read it I felt that he wasn't really that mad about the clothing but it was the fact that she forced it to happen??? Idk, how to explain it lol
But I loved this! :D

Fashion plates normally boring but style that's another thing does not require cash.

I love your biting descriptions. My only suggestion is to remove "most" from before "phoniest". Grammatically, it does not work. Great piece as usual.

I don't know. I believe what you wear is where you are standing. Some of us never gave a damn. I did like the description of people and locations. Thank you for the thoughts provoking poetry. A excellent poem.
