an old-model chevrolet

an old-model chevrolet

A Poem by Daniel Atkinson
"

on the road again.

"

life doesn't seem such a disappointment,
she says around the wind,
to which i smile.
how could i not?
the engine purrs and
i laugh into the sea-salt air:
a joyous, manly sound.

the pleasure comes in frames:
a bent elbow highway
wrapped around a pitted cliff,
a kiss over the stick shift,
an old-model chevrolet
still running,
still roaring a lion song,
its rusted doors creaking a melody
only the living can hear.

Author's Note

Daniel Atkinson
There was an older man in this classic TV movie I was watching and he said the phrase "an old-model Chevrolet". I thought it had a certain bit of nostalgia to it. And, whammo, a poem was born.
