the ribbed cathedral

the ribbed cathedral

A Poem by Daniel Atkinson
"

in the belly of a whale. literally.

"

swallowed by a whale again

i tumbled past its smiling teeth.

i thought of god in its ribbed cathedral

staring into a lake of bile

you were on the end opposite me

whistling a tuneless something. bach, maybe.

do you see me as i see you?

we were sweating

and

i was watching you sweat.

i think we were waiting to die

but i can only speak for myself.

you stared at the ceiling

bit your red lip

glanced nervously down

at your reflection in the bile

is it everything you want it to be?

i had to go to sleep then

i think

the fumes were getting to my head.

Great piece. Like I was watching Pinocchio while drunk on absinthe.
