Why I love Snakes

Why I love Snakes

A Poem by Coldwind

I love snake

Because of the past.

Times when I was a child

When everything I found

Was a treasure.

Every coloured rock

A priceless jewel

As all things are

In the hands of a child.

All my friends

With their fur and scales

Never revealed

The secrets I told them.

Never allowed clouds to form

Over my finger-paint-sunshine world.

You have to be trained to be afraid.

You have to touch the ruby tip

Of your mother's cigarette

To know that it burns.

You have to go to church

To know that you are a dirty little girl

To know that your best friend

Made a weak woman betray her man

And her God.

Then you stop being a child

And you have to scream when you see snakes

And learn to lust after things

That take no imagination to sparkle.
