Soma

Soma

A Poem by CoffeeInfused

A bottle of little white pills

Open, on its side

Strewn across the table

In a pharmaceutical cascade

Just for looks,

For contemplation

They haven’t been taken

They won’t be-

Little round blankets

Of emotional insulation

Making life more bearable

By robbing all sentiment

It’s frightening, simultaneously

Sparking appeal and

Revulsion, some gut feeling

Of not being right, and yet

Apathetic- but is that

A side-effect? Or

A symptom?

Is it worth it?

To forego emotion,

The highest highs

And lowest lows,

Incomparable bliss

And soul-crushing despair

To function “normally”?

I read this one before, too... and waited to review. Hmm... I really don't know how to review poems regarding suicidal ideas. I had a friend lose 2 of her 3 boys last year, one to suicide and one to drugs - my kids knew her boys - just tragic. I hesitate to respond with anything of value except to say that nothing in life should ever be THAT awful. Everyone has SOMEONE that cares for them that can help pull you up or hold you tight. I don't know ... these types of poems just hit a spot the past year I guess.
