The Alcoholic's Lament

The Alcoholic's Lament

A Poem by CoffeeInfused

“Excuse me, barkeep

This glass has a hole, I think

It seems that by the

Time you pour

I already need a new drink

What’s that? Drunk?

You think I’ve had plenty?

I assure you sir

I’ve quite a ways yet

To that proverbial

“one too many”

A lush? No sir,

I’m merely tolerant-

It simply takes me more

To forget what I want

And remember what I can’t

I just take a little more

To distance from my pain

I haven’t been here long enough

But I’ll leave in time

To walk home in the rain

So please, another refill

I’ll decide when I’m done

When it comes to losing yourself

All you can do is run

And run

And run

I tell you, friend

Sometimes it’s pretty rough

When one is far too many

And a hundred is never enough…”

These lines make a bold statement
"It simply takes me more
To forget what I want
And remember what I can’t"

And the last two lines of the poem clinch the mood of this poem perfectly. Sometimes I wish I could drink to that point! Lol... I'd get sick first. Now just after a few glasses of wine I'm just annoying and argumentative (at times) enjoyed the poem very much.

One of the best I have read yet, for sure.
