A Visage of a Lonely Man

A Visage of a Lonely Man

A Poem by CoffeeInfused

A visage of a lonely man

Degrades slow in an ocean of sand

Immortal, unending; yet wasting away

Whittled, worn, day by day

If I was made to be alone

Why not embrace this and make it my home

Never needing another, always on my own-

A rock, a pillar, for family and friend

More concerned for their sake

Than for my own end

If I was made to suffer

And bear another’s cross

Then I think that I should find

The price should meet the cost

Perhaps it best

To turn myself to stone

And make peace the heavy burden

Of forever being alone

And if time should come

When I should waste away

Then I welcome it,

And accept my ending

Never going astray

Simply weathering on

Until my final day

From dust is whence I came

And so, in time, there I shall remain

This is profoundly sad. I don't think anyone is meant to be alone. There is no fate that is meant to be that cruel. Sometimes I think we can be our own worst enemy - living a life that we feel is expected of us - and due to what we feel are obligations, responsibilities, and rigid religious beliefs that it is so contricting that we feel we cannot breathe. An isolation sets in. IMHO - I do not believe God (or the universe, whatever you believe in) would want that type of existence for anyone. Some people need more freedom to thrive! And that is perfectly fine.
Anyway, I ramble on - I think you did an excellent job of conveying the feeling of loneliness, and the conflict that resides within. Well done.
