Cicadas sing

Cicadas sing

A Story by Wisconsin

The cicadas are singing all around my house.

A guy is sitting in the forest right now, a cicada sirens on his shoe. The man looks down at it and begins tapping his foot rhythmically, taptaptap...tap...tap...tap... taptaptap. Secret message: SOS. "Help me!" says the man.

The cicada senses his distress as the vibrations pass through through its tympanium, (or whatever it is that cicadas use to sense such things,) and flies away, leaving the man stranded there.

This is what happens to people who beseech cicadas for help.

The cicada sirens are going off all around me right now. It's a lot like being deep underwater, so deep you can barely see the rays of sun anymore. No matter how high up you swim, you know you won't make it out and there'll always be more layers of cicada sirens all around.

I've given myself a headache, trying to write about cicadas. The sounds they make can be quite peaceful when you're alone, sitting in a hammock, but other times they strike horror-movie chords of anxiety.

Three aspirin later and I still can't quite figure it out.
