![]() Aglets!A Story by WisconsinBought a pair of shoes from a secondhand store a while back. The last person wore them out pretty bad--but the aglets on the end of the lace were still intact. The laces were the originals that came with the shoe, I was pretty sure.
Over the next week, I wore them a bit and the aglets cracked and came off. I don't think I've been able to maintain the aglets on my shoes, ever, in my life. Keeping the aglets intact is a discipline demanding much training; it's not just a skill, it's a way of life. Just like kung fu, karate, or sewing.
I'm just not cut out for that kind of practice.
Those shoes hurt my feet anyway. I started wearing my boots again as soon as the last bits of aglet fell off.
Today I found a shoelace sitting in the curb. A full shoelace--aglets on both ends. I used to wonder how people can possibly maintiain their aglets for more than a few months, but now, a different question springs into mind and I can barely come to grips with it. I can't figure it out:
