![]() Eye ExamA Story by WisconsinI had an eye exam today. Needed to get my prescription renewed, my glasses magically fell apart by the riverbank a few weeks ago and I lost the lenses. I'd go back and look for them, but they're gone now. The flood surely took them.
Sat in one of the chairs, filling out paperwork that some old secretary showed me. I turned it in and waited for my exam.
A young girl walked in, wearing a doctorly labcoat. She looked exactly like a character in a book I've been writing, exactly as I had pictured her; it was amazing. She called me into the back room and tested me for color blindness, that sort of thing. Looked over my paperwork, made small talk, pointed out that my birthday was eight days before hers.
I think I was hopelessly infatuated with her, right then and there.
The doctor came in, examined my eyes, renewed my prescription, and I was sent back to the old secretary in the lobby.
She was talking to me, but I wasn't paying attention. My head kept turning to the side, glancing over at the girl who had initially examined my eyes. She was still examining them, smiling. She didn't have anything to do, no other patients around, so she stared at me and smiled. And then she walked over, right in front of me. Started rearranging the glasses on the wall. We were still staring at each other though, through the mirror.
She pulled a pair down from the shelf and did a little dancy thing on her hips, determining where on the wall to put them.
The older secretary kept droning, something about something or other, I wasn't paying any attention at all. © 2008 WisconsinReviews
