![]() They Came.A Story by Wisconsin![]() Memories that terrify me.![]() It was a nice day, about a week before thanksgiving. Everyone was gathered at the farm. Relatives came, cousins and their respective families. Those of us who were older ate moica sitting around the coffee table on the deck while the younglings ran around playing games of tag.
Then the horse ladies came.
Three hundred pounds each. Twins. Certifiable crazies; living off checks sent by the government to compensate for their certifiable craziness. I always hid when they came. I ran inside and watched them from the safety of the living room window.
They were stabling horses at the farm for a few hundred dollars per month. Four mares, one stallion. Kept the stallion in a separate pen, but on this day they came for breeding. Only they didn't know what they were doing. They didn't know anything about horse psychology. They were nuts.
They took a mare out of the field. Brought it into the stallion's pen.
But that wasn't enough.
All the little kiddies running around outside stopped, watched, their mouths hanging open. One of the womenfolk covered her daughter's eyes. All the men were watching amused, confused, on the verge of both laughter and fear.
The horse ladies remained in the pen with their horses. Trying to 'guide' them. To help out. Wasn't enough to let nature take it's course.
The stallion tried to mount the mare, from the side. Kicked the mare in the head. The mare bolted. The horse lady holding onto the halter was pulled along with it. The horse lady holding onto the stallion was kicked, knocked back several feet. She lay on the ground for a while, then got back up.
The one holding onto the mare had her head trampled into the mud.
She stood up as well. It was like a three stooges act gone horribly awry. They just wouldn't stay down. They were on a mission.
When it was accomplished, they left. They were fine. It wasn't the only time they'd done something stupid and almost gotten killed, and I knew it wouldn't be the last. They were always fine. Went to a hospital to get stiches and to figure out which bones were bruised and how badly, but they were fine. Mission accomplished.
But the horse failed to become pregnant. © 2008 WisconsinAuthor's Note
