"Fireworks"A Story by Cody WilliamsFireworks are seen off into the distance.“Fireworks” By Cody Williams
1. The sounds of the explosions from off in the distance were enough to wake up and startle Harold. He sat up quickly and pushed his back against the headboard and then heard the explosions again from a distance. Harold reached over to the nightstand beside of him and turned the black light nob that was attached to the lamp clockwise. The lamp lit up the room and Harold yawned. He pushed the covers off of him and turned to his side and placed his feet on the hard wood floor. He rose up from the bed and walked over to the bedroom window and separated the blinds and looked outside. The night sky was black with only the porch light that was attached to the back of the house lit up the area. What the hell were those explosions? He asked himself almost knowing the answer. The year was 2029. Guns were illegal and so were fireworks or another explosions. He knew that it was one of the two and he knew that as soon as someone reported the gunshot like sounds, the local authorities would be over to investigate. He stood in silence for a moment. The sky then lit up with a neon green glow as green colored fireworks were shot into the sky and exploded. “S**t!” He said to himself. Harold left the window and walked over to his closet letting the door swing open. He reached into it and pulled out a denim blue button up shirt and a pair of light blue jeans and slipped them on. He sat back down on his bed as the fireworks continued from the distance and he slipped his feet into his muddy work boots and laced them up. Harold once again stood up from the bed and walked over to the gun rack that was beside the bedroom door and grabbed the 22 rifles off of it and left the room.
2. Harold walked down the hallway for his one story home where he lived alone and the out the front door to the front porch. Harvey, his neighbor of about two years, also walked outside to the noise. Harold saw him and walked over to him. “Do you have any idea what the f**k that is Harold?” Harvey asked Harold while slinging the Budweiser beer bottle around in his hand. Harold lifted the Miller Lite ball cap from his head and scratched his head through his salt and pepper hair. “Fireworks! That’s what it looks like at least.” He stated. He placed the cap back firmly on his head and held the rifle by the butt leaning the barrels against his right shoulder. “Looks like they’re coming from somewhere in the woods out back. With no other houses around this area, the damn cops may find a way to frame this on us.” Harold told him. Harvey exhaled and nodded. “Yeah. You’re probably right. Do we need to go out and check it out? I mean, if a damn helicopter flies over, they’ll be over here faster than a nosey mother and law.” Harvey said. Harold nodded and the two men began to make their way towards the woods.
3. As the two of them grew closer and closer to the woods and the fireworks continued to light up the sky, an eerie green light began to pulsate throughout the woods. It would get really bright for a moment and then fade away as if it was never there. Then it would light back up again. “What the f**k is that?” Harvey said as he pointed into the woods. He looked down at the beer bottle in his hand and then threw it down on the ground. “Are you seeing that too?” He asked again. Harold stopped and nodded. He then motioned for Harvey to follow. The two continued and started through the woods. The pulses of the light grew stronger and stronger. The hairs on the back of Harold’s neck began to stand up and goose bumps appeared all over his body with the hairs on his arms rising as well. The farther the two men walked into the woods the more they noticed that the wildlife that would usually be there were not. The hoot of the owls became nonexistent, as did the screeching sounds of the crickets and grasshoppers. They walked for a few more minutes and then they saw it. It was large clear crystal that was sticking halfway out of the ground pointing towards the sky. It was clear for a moment but then lit back up in a bright neon color. Harold began to make his way towards it. He swallowed hard and reached out his right arm and touched the top of it. The crystal turned black but was still pulsating in that same neon green color. The pulsating stopped and the crystal stayed lit up. Harold’s breathing began to get harder. At first he didn’t quite know what to think, but he kept his hand on it. He continued to breath harder and began to moan lightly. “What the f**k is going on Harold?” Harvey asked. Harold said nothing and just closed his eyes and let out a groan of pleasure. He didn’t really know how to explain it at first. At first it felt like he just had to pee, but then it could be described as the best sexual feeling of his life. The ground around them began to vibrate. Harold kept his hand on the crystal as it then began to shoot out of the ground. The earth began to crack and a strange item came through it. Harvey ran over to Harold who was still enjoying the sensation caused by the crystal and grabbed him by the shoulder. “Come on man! We have to…” He started to say before the luminous green light captured his eyes hypnotizing him. The ship that cam out of the ground was made of metal was shaped like a giant Frisbee. The front door of it opened revealing a blinding white light and a large metal ramp shot out towards them. The two of them just stood there memorized as they looked at the creature that approached them. The creature had twelve tentacles shooting out from its oval shaped body and slithered down onto them. “You have awoken us!” The creature said. The two men stood in silence with a gaze in their eyes and drool dripping from their mouths. “You have awoken us! And for that we are grateful! But, now we will be taking back what always has been ours. Before that damn asteroid shower hit the earth and buried us and our ship forcing us into hibernation! We are taking it back!” The creature continued. The creature’s mouth dropped open revealing inch long jagged razor sharp teeth and the same green light that shot out of the crystal shot out of it’s eyes and mouth onto the two men. The light continued for a moment and then disappeared back into the body of the beast. Harold and Harvey looked at each other dazed and confused for a moment. “I want you to go tell everyone about what you found out here and bring them to us! As soon as we have them under our control, nothing can stop us!” The creature said. “Yes master!” Harold and Harvey said in unison with a dead like look on their face. They turned their back to the creature and walked out of the woods to get the others.
