“Finger Taps”

By Cody Williams

Randal Ellis woke frightened knowing that what he heard couldn’t have been. He pushed himself up against the headboard of his twin size and pulled the sheets over him in a terrified manner leaking only his forehead and eyes exposed. Randy knew he couldn’t have heard what he heard. He glanced out the window across the room from the bed and watched the streaks of lightning laminate the black sky.

He reached his right hand up and wiped the beads of sweat that were running down his face and sighed in relief.

‘It was just a dream.’ He thought to himself as let out a nervous giggle hoping and preying that he was right. But he knew that wasn’t really the case. He knew that he heard something, and knew that it came from outside his window. Randy scooted himself back down in the bed and rolled over on his side in attempt to go to sleep. He closed his eyes and let out a gentle sigh of relief. He laid there in total silence for a moment hearing nothing but an occurring thunderclap. But then he heard it again. It was the same terrifying sound that woke him up before.

He didn’t really know what it was. All he knew is that it wasn’t natural. There was something outside of his window…and he knew it.

He once again pushed himself back up against the headboard of the bed as he glanced out of the window. There was nothing there that he could see…but there just had to be something out there.

‘It’s probably just the wind you big p***y! Man up and go check it out!’ He thought to himself.  He pushed the blankets off of him and turned to his side placing his feet on the plain white carpet that was on the floor. ‘But wait! What if I’m wrong? What if there is indeed something out there? What if it’s just waiting for me to go check on it? What if it wants me to get up and go over there?’ He thought to himself again. Randy crawled back into bed when he heard it again.

He still didn’t know what it was. His best guess was tree branch tapping it libs on the window. That’s not that bad of a thought really…except for the fact that his dad chopped down the big tree that was on the outside of his window over a year ago. To be honest it the sound was much like the sound of the tapping of fingernails.

Randy placed his feet back on the floor and gazed out of the window hoping that he could see what was making that dreadful noise. He set for nearly ten minutes in total silence. No sound except for the occasional clap of thunder. He continued staring at the window until he finally saw an arm reach out of nowhere and drag its dreadful fingernails across the glass. The shriek was enough to make him start to grind his teeth. He just sat there for a moment not knowing if what he saw was really there.

After a few more minutes off waiting, a head hade it’s way around the corner looking in his bedroom window. It looked like what could only be described as a starving old man. He had a strange pale yet green and blue-tented skin color that looked like it just drooped over his bones with no meat whatsoever. The man had what looked like the stereotypical nose of a Halloween witch. The man looed over to him and raised his index fingers that had an inch long fingernail and began to give a “come here” motion.

Randal looked to the sandwich bag that was filled with weed and knocked it off of the nightstand into the floor. He then reached down pulling the blanket over his head.

‘It can’t be! It just can’t! I just have to get a hold of myself! There’s nothing there to be afraid of! I’m just hallucinating from the weed! Yes! That’s it! I just need to lay off the weed!’ He thought to himself almost knowing that it was bullshit. Almost knowing that he was just trying to convince himself. ‘When uncover myself and look out the winder, nothing will be there! Nobody will be there! Ok here we go! One…two…three!’ He thought to himself as he threw the blankets off of him and looked over to the window. The man was still there.

“Randy!” The mysterious man called out to him and motioned for him to come to the window. “Come on Randy! Let me in! I just want to talk!” The man said calling out to Randy again. Randy knew he probably shouldn’t, but he stood up from the bed and began to make his way across the room to the window. He didn’t know why, but he felt the urge to find out more. He felt the urge to let the man in.

He reached the window and looked outside of it. The man was wearing a long black cloak and was just floating in mid air.

“I know what you’re thinking Randy!” The man said to him. “You’re thinking that I’m just a hallucination. That I’m just a figment of your imagination! That I’m just a damn side affect from your damn pot!” The continued. “If you really think that, why don’t you just let me in? I mean, I can’t really hurt you right?” The man said as he continued to persuade him. He thought about it for a while and then shook his head.

“Come on now Randy! What do you have to lose? A weed-smoking junkie like you! A no good high school drop out still living with your parents. Come on! It will put your mind at ease!” The man told him. Randy just looked at him dazed for a moment before finally reaching over and lifting up the latch and opening the window. “That’s my boy!” The man said with a wicked grin as he flew into the bedroom. Randy stumbled his way back to his bed and jumped in it. The man reached over grabbing a joint off the top of the TV set and lighting it. He put the joint into his mouth and exhaled smoke followed with a fulfilling sigh. The man threw the joint down on the floor and began to make his way to Randy’s bedside.

Randy reached back down pulling the covers back over him. The man smiled down at him in a sadistic way. The man reached his long boney arm up grabbing the covers away from Randy and throwing them down on the floor.

“It’s go time Randal!” The man said with a wicked gin as he began to reach down at him and Randy let out a loud scream of terror and desperation.

“Randal! It is after noon! Get your a*s out of bed and go Goddamn job hunting!” The angry voice of Dale, Randy’s dad, shouted as he pounded his fist up against Randy’s locked door. “Boy I’m not joking! You better not have Goddamn weed in there either! Get your a*s up or I’m going to bust this Goddamn door down!” He shouted again. Dale waited for a response. After no response he stepped away from the door as he began to roll up the sleeves of his button up flannel shirt.

“That’s it! I’m coming in!” Dale shouted. He braced himself and then took off full speed towards the door busting it down. Dale gasped with disgust. The room was covered with marijuana leaves and the most awful odor came from the room. He reached up and placed his hand over his mouth to hide the stench and began to make his way over to Randy’s bed. There was something really bad wrong with his son. He could see that. He skin was as pale as a white sheet of paper and his eyes were wide open. His facial expression looked as if somebody snuck up from behind him and got him.

Dale fell to his knees and began to sob with both anger and despair.

I got the idea for this story when I was laying in bed one night and a thunder storm was rolling through. I began to hear a strange sound that sounded like fingernails tapping on the window. It turned out just to be hail, but the image never left my mind. I hope you guys enjoy it! Thanks for reading!

Firstly, this story is in need of a very thorough edit, as there were quite a few mistakes which threw off the whole flow of the story.
As for the story itself, it is a really wonderful idea, and your descriptions are well done, but there is always for potential to add more. It is a really good way to add suspense and leave people horrified but unable to tear their eyes away from the page.
All in all, give it a good read through and you will have one awesome story.

I think the old man was an hallucenation that became real. Randy should have taken it easy on the pot.

In the first paragraph you use the phrase "knowing that what he heard couldn’t have been," and then you say" Randy knew he couldn’t have heard what he heard." Too much repetition.

Sometime the light at the end of the tunnel really is a crazed b*****d with a flashlight, or something like that, only funnier!

I'm not sure if marijuana causes hallucinations ... that comes from heavier drugs ... but it does cause an incredible lethargy with heavy usage ... and loss of motivation. That might resemble that thing on the bed. Nice write.
