It's every writers dream. To be a character in a story. But when Robbie did it, it went horribly wrong.

“No Longer With Us”

By Cody Williams

My name is Sam Hampton. I am senior in college where I am majoring in film studies and I make short films. I don’t have a lot of time left, because I know it’s coming. My younger brother, Robbie, was a freshman English major in creative writing. He wrote short stories. He was damn good. He was published in several literary magazines and was considered to be the next all time great. I actually did a couple of short film adaptations on his work. They all got great reviews.

It was unheard of how a young writer like him was getting critical acclaim. It’s a real shame what had happened. Now nobody will witness his brilliance. He really knew how to scare people. Maybe he knew that a little two much. He created the most horrific monster in the history of the horror genre. He became obsessed with it. You see, Robbie, entered a bit of a depressed stage when he entered his freshman year in college. I don’t know if it was that he missed home or what it was. But his output nearly quadrupled. He would skip classes to write. He would daydream about being there with the characters he created that he fell in love with.

It was as if, he was no longer with us. It was as if he had entered his own universe. I had no idea how accurate that statement was. I had no idea that he was slipping away. I saw less and less of him as the semester went on. He locked himself in that damn dorm room and played make believe all day. I knew that there was absolutely no way he was going to pass his classes. So I went to his room to pay him a visit. I knocked on his door and just stood there in the hallway. No answer.

“Come on Robbie! Answer the damn door!” I shouted as I pounded on the door. Still no answer. I left him be. I didn’t see him again for another month.

I was in the coffee house on campus last week when he came in and sat down next to me. He was so excited. He had this new crazy idea. He called it “The great rewrite.” I don’t know where the idea came from, but he thought it was going to be the biggest stunt in the history of literature. He said that he was going to incorporate himself into his make believe world. That he would write himself into one of his stories. Now, I just went along with it in the “sure, whatever you say” kind of way.

I thought he was just rambling nonsense. You know, the way writers usually do. I thought he was just rambling on about a new story of his. But was I wrong. Oh boy was I wrong. That is exactly what he did.

He walked up to me earlier today and told me to follow him. I did. I followed him up to his room and followed him in. He walked over to his desk and sat down. I sat down on his couch and looked at him.

“Robbie what’s this whole thing about? Why am I here.” I asked him. He looked back at me and smiled.

“You want to know what this is about big brother? I can show you! I can do it! It’s time for the big rewrite!” He said turning back to his laptop and turning it on. I shook my head in disbelief and looked back at him.

“What do you mean the big rewrite? What the hell does that mean?” I asked him. He turned his black leather computer chair completely around and looked at me again.

“The big rewrite. I’m going to go into my fictional world and live. That’s the only place I can truly be happy.” He said with delight.

“Robbie, you are just talking crazy now!” I told him. His smile turned to a frown and he looked with a hurt expression.

“But this is the only way I can be happy. Don’t you want me to be happy big brother.” He asked me sadly. I looked down at the floor in shame for a moment and then looked up at him and motioned for him to continue. He smiled happily and turned his attention back to his computer. He logged himself in and went straight to a word document. At the top of the page he typed THE GREAT REWRITE and turned back to me. “Get ready big brother. This is going to be history.” He turned back to the computer and began playing make believe. What happened next, I never would have known if I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes?

He began glowing a lime green color and began to fade in and out. I stood up from my seat in awe and walked over to him. But before I could grab him a green lighting bolt flashed out to him and pulled him into the computer. He was gone. I leaned over the desk and looked at the screen. The damn son of a b***h actually pulled it off! He mad himself a character in his own story. But with that came a price. The laptop began to spark and another lightning bolt shot out of the screen. I leaped back and ran over to the door.

Appearing out of the lightening bolt was none other than the worst creature he ever created. He called it Project X. In the story it was a science experiment that ended up biting the scientists in the a*s. It was nine feet tall and covered in fur. It had eight long tentacles and sharp jagged teeth that looked as if they measured a half a foot long. I ran out of the building leaving the monster there. You see, that was the price. For him to live in his story, something had to come out of it. That’s why I’m making this video. To explain what happened before it got me. I got to go now. It’s here! That’s a wrap!

Becoming a character in a story or writing our biography simply puts us in the context of our experiences in the world. But to view the experience as a rewrite ... is to imply that we didn't do so before ... and to suggest that perhaps we ought to. Nice.

I think there is a fine line between this world and the cyber world, and Robbie found the key. One of your best stories I've read.

I think Robbie achieved what many writers would like to do... enter our stories. Very nice. You have a cool imagination. Speaking of bringing our characters to life, you might enjoy this very short story that I wrote.

Wow! I wonder if Robbie knew what would happen when he insisted on going into his own world?

That's what happens to writers who get too obesessed...

The universe must always be balanced. I like the premise a lot. I do think that last paragraph needs something to show the reader rather than tell. I think you ended it a paragraph too soon. ; )

Wow, I'd like to stick around after leaving a comment on this excellent mind-trip, but I don't like the way some of the characters I've created have been looking at me!

You know I love your writing, This one the ending is a little too jumbled. Stretch it out and flesh it out a bit more is all. You don't need any more guidance than that.
