We Are Society

We Are Society

A Poem by Codi Ann
"

A poem I wrote on a modern injustice for English class

"
We tell people to live their own lives
Be themselves, who they really are
Yet we stand around yelling at them
Deciding what is wrong and what is right
You like your own gender? Sinner!
You don't believe in a god? You're evil!
You aren't stick thin? Fix it.
Oh but you are stick thin? Eat more.
You believe in a god? Religious bigot.
You like the opposite gender? Close minded homophobe.
None of that is right, it's what's wrong
We tell people to express themselves
Then shut them down and silence them
But we are not machines
We can not be programmed to be a social perfect
Yet society tries to bind us
You don't fit it? Suffer the ridicule.
You won't conform? The bullying is all on you.
Wait, you've put scars on your skin?
Poison in your veins?
Attention seeker! Emo freak! You're just a cop out!
But as time passes, you can't hold on anymore
Where'd you go?
You've died by your own hand? No!
You were so loved and beautiful
Why'd you do it?
This is wrong!
We must stand up to society and yell stop!
Why do we praise only after they're dead?
They need to hear it when they're alive!
When it counts!
Not be up in arms after the fact
After the homosexual is found hanging
When the girl is found with water in her lungs
When the boy is found with his arms slit
We shouldn't let it get that far
They don't need love after they die
They need it so they don't die!
Society won't care until after you're gone
In fact, society will never care
Society is what puts you in that dark place
It pushes you down so deep until you're gone
So lost in darkness that nothing can help you
Not even the love that comes with death
No amount of love will keep you here
Or save you from yourself
We need to stand up to society
Say "no more!"
Society can no longer judge us!
No longer will society push us around or down
No more letting it drown us in the darkness until we're lost
Society is no match if we're united
Smile at everyone you see, make a change in yourself
Help someone struggling, and hug someone who's sad
Let's change ourselves, and open our eyes to the truth
The horrible monster that pushes us to end ourselves
Society, is us, ourselves
We are this dark monster
We Are Society.
