When I Grow Up

When I Grow Up

A Poem by Elizabeth Fiske
"

We're all connected with one another, no matter who different we all are :)

"
In first grade
The teacher stared right at me
And asked,
"What do you wanna be when you grow up?'
And I thought,
"What a stupid question."
~ ~ ~
I write for myself.
But...
Who am I?
Really?
I'm that voice in you head
That tells you to never give up.
I'm the emo girl
Who hates her life.
I'm the popular girl
Who holds onto vanity.
I'm the innocent child
Holding onto unrealistic expectations.
I'm the teacher
Who asks stupid questions.
I'm the girl next door
Left to survive in the background.
I'm the celebrity
Who you'll never be as great as.
I'm the rebel
With dyed hair and holes in my face.
I'm the daydreamer
With secret beauty isolated from the world.
I'm the hospital patient
Living just to die.
I'm the failure
Forgotten like yesterday's news.
~ ~ ~
I'm depression,
A silent killer.
I'm anger,
A spontaneous killer.
I'm jealousy,
A fearful killer.
I'm regret,
An antagonizing killer.
I'm fear,
An imaginary killer.
I'm pain,
The bullets in a killer's gun.
~ ~ ~
I am me,
The only one,
The only kind,
The original.
I am you,
The only one,
The only kind....
But you're the original.
I am us,
Not the only one,
No the only kind,
We are original.
~ ~ ~
So, dearest teacher,
If I could see you again one day,
I would finally answer your question
"I want to be myself when I grow up."

I admit that it's not one of my best poems, but I just felt like I needed to get this out of my system. Enjoy :)

That was freaking AMAZING! I loved the thing at the beginning, it reminded me of the quote "When I was five years old, my teacher asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I said 'happy' She told me I didn't understand the question. I told her she didn't understand life." or whatever it was. I don't know it line-by-line.

Anyfreakingway, I absolutely love this. I love the comparisons, the words you used, the way you said "i am this", "I am that". It really added to the poem, reminded people of the different sides. "I'm the copy, but you're the original". I absolutely LOVED that part. Only you can be yourself. Other people can try to copy you, but that's all they are - copies. I also love the comparisons between emotions, fear, anger, pain, the KILLERS. I love the last part too, the part about if you ever say the dearest teacher again, you'd say "I wanna be myself when I grow up." I think it would be AMAZING if a little kid said that to their teacher. It would be awesome and funny to see.

I really love this. It has a really interesting and relate-able topic. It's like an entertaining lesson on life. Much better than getting asked stupid questions by teachers. I'm adding this to my favorites. I love it so much. :3

You make yourself seem so much smaller than you actually are. Who are you to say that this is not one of your bests? I think it is truly amazing. Labeling is something that occurs daily. Somebody is always going to try to tell you who you are, but the only thing that matters is who you think you are. You have to label yourself. The only proper way to label myself is me. I'm simply, purely and truly me. There's no other me out there. Just like there's no other you out there. Everyone is one of a kind.

NIce writing, and I remember trying to make it through class, until I got to the next teacher. Endurance and perseverance became my teachers when the real ones were egotistical entrepreneurs selling only boredom.
