White Walls, Bright Lights
A Poem by
Judas Hammer
A place of death and a place for life.
White Walls, Bright Lights
I first saw the white walls
And bright lights
As a boy
Visiting my grandfather
The big German
Fighting the bigger C
I remember the bright lights
Hurting my eyes
Blinding
Scorching
In a place that kept death’s door
Wide open
He was gone
I remember the bright lights
And white walls
In the hospital
Alone
Over night
My leg cut open
The pain so harsh
My teeth chattered
Fear
Loneness
Loom over me
I remember bright lights
And white walls
In the hallway
Hearing the maternal scream
And the blissful cries of new angels
Waiting for my daughter
I think she’ll be here
Around 2:00 o’clock
So they say

Colors remembered .. re-visited .. Then JOY returns .. And we hold new sweet memories ... And some pain seems to melt away ..

Well crafted, I personally have seen too many of those white walls and bright lights, but the circle of life you've described is well done.

this is beautiful. except should it say maternal rather than material scream? Thankyou.

Wonderful write, I work in such a place, and never have I seen such extemes of human emotion. I have said and stand by my words should I ever hit the powerball and not have to work, I will remain working here just for the sheer inspiration of it!

Many aspects to the same experience, making it difficult to say whether one should exult or depress at the sight of white walls bright lights. Curiously, an experience of new life where one experienced loss before, is an incredible mix of images, sufficient to overcome the previous. Nice write!

I saw three different views of the same place. First, death, then an injury (hate those, had one myself recently, though a different pain), lastly life being entered into this world. This was an enlightening view of someplace most of us really would rather not spend any time in. I'm extremely sorry for your loss, injury, but all smiles for you and your daughter. (wonders that they are) :) Thank you for sharing your expierences and bringing to light how we look at the same place in 3 totally different ways. Not always sorrow. (Hope I read that right, alittle foggy this morning) :)
