White Walls, Bright Lights

White Walls, Bright Lights

A Poem by Judas Hammer
"

A place of death and a place for life.

"

White Walls, Bright Lights

I first saw the white walls

And bright lights

As a boy

Visiting my grandfather

The big German

Fighting the bigger C

I remember the bright lights

Hurting my eyes

Blinding

Scorching

In a place that kept death’s door

Wide open

He was gone

I remember the bright lights

And white walls

In the hospital

Alone

Over night

My leg cut open

The pain so harsh

My teeth chattered

Fear

Loneness

Loom over me

I remember bright lights

And white walls

In the hallway

Hearing the maternal scream

And the blissful cries of new angels

Waiting for my daughter

I think she’ll be here

Around 2:00 o’clock

So they say

one of my favorite lines from anything ever, not just this poem:
"Hearing the maternal scream
And the blissful cries of new angels"

you are so adept at creating atmosphere and making what happens in it eloquently human.

From the initial set up, the ending is a wonderful emotional release. You almost bring forth the smell of the damn corridors. Superb write. Thoroughly enjoyed

the conciliatory phase of the poem is very impressive. After the reminiscence of the harsh physically or mentally excruciating moments, the poem concludes with the birth of an offspring. Just at its end, it is mentioned 'so they say' despite the joy from the possibility of having a new-born. I'd rather believe there is such a birth to bring merriment to life.

ow this poem shows the feeling of what hospitals can give. Pain and joy all at the same time. I love it keep writing.

I dislike hospital. I have been lucky. Never needed to go to one for myself. I like the description. For a building with so many people. A hospital can seen cold and lonely. Waiting for a daughter to be born is a good day. Thank you for the excellent poem.
