![]() Look who went Downtown ! The Adventures of Jake, Willard and WinstonA Story by Cookie![]() Three dogs, wanting to see new things, leave their neighborhood and find adventure downtown.![]()
Back in the neighborhood, just like Winston figured in our last tale, Jake, and Willard were getting restless. They had sneaked out of the neighborhood once and now there was no turning back. No amount of chasing cars or balls was going to give them the same adrenaline fix they had the last time they decided to do something stupid. They were pestering Winston to sneak out with them one more time. “Just once more,” Jake and Willard said in unison. “We’ll never ask again.” Of course, if dogs had fingers, they would have been crossed behind their backs.
Winston said “This is a really bad idea guys. If we run into that dog catcher again we might not get away. What will we do then? It’s not like they’re going to give us a phone call. Were dogs if you forgot.” “Oh you just worry too much.” Jake laughed, “I mean, what could possibly go wrong?” Winston had heard that before. Jake and Willard were still young enough that they never considered the consequences of anything. They just dove right in and then had to figure out how to get out of trouble. “Ok. Just one more time. That’s it. We have to be careful because if the dog catcher doesn’t get us, if our people find out, they might send us to the pound anyway.” Winston said with a tone of dread in his voice. He had to go with them though, they were best friends and best friends always stick together and have each others backs. No matter what. The three prepared themselves for their adventure. They made sure all three were wearing their tags. That way if they got caught the pound would call their people instead of keeping them locked up forever, or worse. We’ll not even consider the ‘or worse’ scenario. That would put a quick end to all their adventures and we wouldn’t want that. At noon, Jake, Willard and Winston met at the fire hydrant next to Jake’s house. They knew they would have a few hours before the children returned from school and would be looking for them. They quickly and quietly slipped down the back alley between the houses and to the edge of their neighborhood. Willard said, “This is so exciting! I wonder what we’ll find when we get downtown?” He was so excited he was shaking and had to pee, just like chihuahuas do. “Calm down dummy you’ll get us caught.” Jake whispered. They finally made it out of their neighborhood and found themselves in another part of the city they had never seen before. There were lots of buildings with giant neon signs above the door. Loud music came out onto the sidewalk as they walked by. There were women just standing smoking cigarettes on the corner. Sometimes, someone would pull up and ask for a date. Then the nice lady would feel sorry for them for not having any friends and would get in the car and go for a ride. ”Well isn’t that nice of those ladies.” Jake thought to himself, “They just hang out and ride around with anybody that’s lonely. Wow!” They walked all around and they were taking in all the sights of things they never knew existed. They came up to a building with the door propped open. Willard said, “Hey let’s go in here.” Winston protested but have you ever known of an excited little dog to listen? Me neither. The three of them slowly wandered into the open door. There was a big room with a long bar. the room was almost empty. There was a man sitting at the bar with his head down on his arms. “He must be taking a nap.” Jake thought to himself. Then there was one other person there. A big man with a beard and long hair. He was wiping down a glass behind the bar when he saw the three dogs and instead of shooing them away he thought, “Why not? It’s dead anyway.” He was a dog person obviously. He found three bowls and filled them with draft beer and set them in front of our trio. Winston barked. He wanted to say, “Thank you!” But all he could do was bark. Of course that’s what he did. He’s a dog for goodness sake. What else did you expect? Winston was glad the man had given them bowls of water. They were parched. “This water tastes funny.” Willard said. “Drink it. You just finished licking your butt 5 minutes ago. Why wouldn’t it taste funny?” Winston laughed. Needless to say, these pups had never drank alcohol before and thought it was just funny tasting water. Each of them drank their bowl like they would never drink water again. As soon as they finished, the man would fill their bowls again. After about 30 minutes Jake, Willard and Winston were having a great time. Running around. Pooping on the sidewalk. All kinds of stupid stuff. Things that would draw people’s attention. Winston said, “There must have been something in that water. I don’t feel so good.” ”Me either.” the other two agreed. It suddenly occurred to them that they better hurry home before the bus got home with the children. They’ll be in big trouble if they miss it. Then, as they rounded the corner just a couple blocks from home, there was that dog catcher. He was parked on the corner and was looking for three dogs that were spotted pooping on the sidewalk. Someone had called the po-po. “What do we do?” Willard said in a worried voice. Jake said, “Just act natural, we only need to get to the other side of that van and we’re home free. We can run through the construction site and lose him.” “Act natural.” Winston said, “That’s easy for you to say.” The three casually strolled along on the opposite side of the street from the dog catchers van. “Hey! You three! Stop!” The dog catcher yelled when he saw them. “Run!” Jake yelled. They ran as fast as they could through an open gate and into the construction site. The dog catcher ran behind them but slipped and fell into a freshly poured concrete sidewalk, “That was close!” Willard exclaimed, trying to catch his breath. The three had barely made it home in time to meet the children. There wasn’t going to be much playing today though. They were feeling terrible. They each stumbled to their respective beds and passed out. The next day they were still too hungover to even talk about their trip, “See, this is what happens.” Winston said. Hopefully Jake, Willard and Winston will have learned their lesson about leaving the neighborhood. Knowing these guys, I wouldn’t count on it though. I guess we will find out on their next adventure.
