…. When You Show Off Your Beaver

…. When You Show Off Your Beaver

A Story by Cookie
"

A beaver goes to the city seeking the attention she doesn’t get at home.

"
Far away in the forest lived a community of beavers. We’re only going to discuss two. Dick and Wanda. Dick was an engineer so all he could think about was building dams. His wife, Wanda, couldn’t take Dick ignoring her any more. She wanted attention and she felt unappreciated. Wanda decided Dick could do what he wanted, dam the whole river if he liked, she was going to the city. She’d be surprised if Dick even noticed she were gone.

Wanda had a friend in the city. A human friend named Irene. When Wanda was just a pup, she lived with Irene. You could say she was Irene’s beaver back then. Wanda made her way out of the forest and into the city. She found Irene’s apartment and knocked on the door. “Who is it?” Irene asked as she looked out the peephole. “I don’t see anyone.” “Down Here!” Wanda shouted in her little beaver voice. “Oh there you are.” Irene laughed as she opened the door.

Wanda sat with Irene and told her the whole sad story. How Dick only worried about playing with sticks in the river and ignored her constantly. Irene said in an excited voice, “I know! I’ve got just the thing. I’m going to a party later. I can show you to all my friends. They’ve begged to see my beaver! Surely that will cheer you up.” Wanda thought for a minute and said, “You know, that might just do the trick!”

Later that evening the two got dressed and gussied up as pretty as could be for the night to come. Irene and Wanda had discussed shaving off all Wanda’s hair, but the two decided natural was the way to go. They heard a car pull up and blow its horn. “That must be the taxi!” Irene said excitedly. She picked up Wanda and out the door they went. When they got to the taxi Irene opened the door and got in. The driver said, “What is that there? Pets are extra.” “Oh, She’s not a pet. Here, let me show you my beaver.” Irene said with a smile. The driver's eyes got big as pie plates and he almost fainted. “What did you say?” The driver asked. Irene said again, “Let me show you my beaver. She came to visit from the forest and we’re going to a party.” The driver finally understood and he disappointedly turned around, shook his head and started driving.

They pulled up to the party and it looked like there was a lot of people who had shown up. The two exited the taxi, thanked the driver and walked into the house. They quickly started drinking and mingling with the other guests. “Hey Willie!” Irene shouted across the room. “Look! I want to show you my beaver!” Willie took a quick double take and saw that Irene was actually holding a beaver. “This is my friend from the forest and we’re out to have fun!” Irene explained.
Throughout the night Wanda had lots of fun. Irene had shown her beaver to just about everyone there.

Wanda was overjoyed. She had never gotten so much attention. She was ignored in the forest but here in the city everyone wanted to see Irene’s beaver. As the night went on the two found themselves wasted. The music played loud and they partied as long as they could. The next morning, Irene and Wanda woke up, struggled to focus their eyes and looked around. They weren’t quite sure where they were but something gave them the impression that Irene had shown off her beaver a little too much. They couldn’t even remember everyone Irene had shown her beaver to. They looked at each other and decided they should quickly get dressed and head for home.

As much as Wanda enjoyed the attention, she thought city people were way too excited about seeing Irene’s beaver. It was all just too much attention for Wanda. She decided she would head back to the forest and to her surprise, Dick had quit working on his dam and had been looking for her all night. Dick said, “lm so glad you came back. I was terrified. I thought you might have gone to the city. You’re not Irene’s beaver anymore. You’re my beaver and what is Dick to do without his beaver?”

From that day on Dick made sure he took the time to make Wanda feel special. They spent everyday together, happy as could be. Dick didn’t waste all his time playing with sticks in the river anymore. Apparently, Dick realized he just couldn’t live without his beaver.

And they lived happily ever after….

The End
