~Three's A CrowdA Poem by Clyde du CoeurFreshers Week at university, October 2006.
Burn a hole in the back of my dress; Simply cut me out; Leave me in a mild state of distress; Keep spinning your roundabout.
Take her hand; Capture her on zoom; Leave me to stand, Watching your budding friendship bloom.
Have you ever considered what you’re putting me through? Probably not – now you’ve got her, No one else matters – it’s just you two.
“Three’s a crowd” And I’ve always known, But I know better now; The seeds have been sown: Nothing will change, And there’s no point trying, Ain’t it strange? The jealousies from high school are far from dying.
I turned away While you ignored me, Then you went astray, And I was left alone in the Fresher Sea.
I waited for over twenty And neither did return, I’m sure you were gossiping a-plenty; Everything gained, case adjourned.
Even if you weren’t, Did you not realise I wasn’t there? You left me hurt, broken, burnt… You didn’t try to contact me – you didn’t care.
Last words – it’s happened before And it will happen again; By day, friends, flatmates nothing more By night, poison oxygen.
[Inspired and based on events in early October 2006]
