To My Love in the Sky

To My Love in the Sky

A Poem by Indoor Downpours
"

A poem of life and death, love and loss, and how childhood memories become nostalgic at the end of our days.

"
Every childhood dream we shared
Are like stepping stones in this space.
As your dad led you down, I couldn't help but frown
As I saw the tears stream down his face.
You took my hand, we continued on
Like we did when we were kids.
And we said our vows, I lost my balance
Before you lost me in that kiss.
Our footprints carry on together
Like flowers as they bloom
I never thought life could make me smile
The way I do when I look at you.
You turned marriage into adventure
Another wonder of the world.
We painted colors along the house
With a foundation that grew and grew.
I never knew what to expect
When you called me up that day.
A set of footprints in the middle of ours
I never found the words to say.
It took some work making our house bigger
We built a fort inside his bedroom
With handprints along his crib
So he could feel the warmth of you.
I still remained so speechless
All I could do was hold you close
When what you've prayed so long for gets taken away
It's hard not to lose hope.
Those footprints said goodbye as we broke our hearts and cried.
We lit our candles and said our prayers and laid awake all night.
We spent the money to go on another adventure
It helped you to smile again, the way you did when we were little
We climbed the Andes mountains, you said you never felt so tall
If I could have the world then I'd let you see it all.
Further down the road, we've grown hair of feather grey
You can barely sweep the floor, and I can hardly hear a thing.
This retired life goes by so slow, but its never been so fun.
When I look back on the life we've made it seems like its just begun.
And in December the cold caught you in it's snare
Your withered bones were tired and I fell into despair
I tried my best to say that it would be alright.
But in a hospital bed, you met Jesus that night.
I walked down the aisle that we treaded years ago
Retracing our old footsteps with a sad and somber tone
I made the chapel as colorful as could be
That way up in Heaven you could look down and see.
You will always mean the world to me.
From the highest peaks to the deepest seas
The tallest mountains and the lowest valleys
Every wonder of the world you never got to see
Is painted in my heart like a childhood memory.
