Nothing But Air

Nothing But Air

A Poem by Clarence Tide

The cool concrete is beneath me

My bare feet feel the rough

(They’re numb with cold)

My fingers curl around the handrail

But this is not enough

I step up, onto the lowest bar

(The metal’s cold, so cold)

And I can see the pavement below

As I lean out over the edge

Take a good look before I go

If I go over I’ll fall straight down

Nothing will soften the landing

(There’s only concrete and passing cars)

But this is what I want, it must be

And yet my heart is pounding

I climb over the rail and now

There’s nothing between me and the air

(There’s no breeze, just a numbing cold)

But as I step forwards into nothing

I find that I don’t care…
