Lying Awake

Lying Awake

A Poem by ClareW

Lying awake

I stare at the celling

Focus, Focus

Breath in Breath out

In and Out, In and Out

Squeeze your eyes shut

And pray for sleep to come

But deep down you know that it won’t

The fears and worries that plague your days

Haunt your nights as well

Words unspoken

Things left for tomorrow

Mistakes made

The inevitable future mistakes

Run rampant through your mind

Trampling the slight possibility of sleep

Try harder

Close your eyes

Ignore the thoughts

There is no mythical monster under the bed

Just last weeks late homework

No malicious harpy in the closet

Just last year’s clothes

No medusa in the mirror

Just my face

Let the monsters go

They’re in your head

Just go to sleep

The sun rises

another night lost

running towards sleep

fighting my thoughts

in an uphill battle

that will be forever lost
