The Girl In The Mirror

The Girl In The Mirror

A Stage Play by ClareW
"

I wanted to write a scene that would help portray the inner battle that goes through some girls minds while getting ready. Feedback would be appreciated Thanks for reading it :)

(Girl and Reflection are wearing the same outfit, should fit

girl nicely but be unflattering on Reflection)(Loud pop music

is playing)(Girl stands in front of an empty frame meant to

be a mirror. Reflection stands on the other side mimicking

Girls movements.) (Girl is wearing a dress and prepping for

a dance or party.)* Both sides of the mirror will need

identical make up sets so that they will look the same.

Girl: (holding up two different eye shadow colors to her

eyes) Green or gold (other colors can be used)

Reflection: (thinks about it first)Go with the green it’s more

interesting

(Both apply green shadow, and start to apply eye liner)

(Girl

finishes applying eyeliner and scrutinizes her face in the

mirror)

Reflection: No amount of eyeliner is going to make our

eyes look bigger.

Girl: Oh, Shut Up (leans forward and applies more eyeliner)

Reflection: ooh Try some Lipstick. (Holds up tube of

lipstick).

Girl: That is so not my color

Reflection: Then why did you buy it?

Girl: I don’t know, I felt like it

Reflection: well there’s no use in wasting it, Come on we

never wear anything fun

(Glances at magazine)

Girl: Fine(giving in)

(Girl applies Lipstick)

Reflection: That’s better our lips are so thin

Reflection: (pulling at clothes) why are we wearing THIS.

It’s positively awful.

Girl: (picks up magazine and sighs) I saw it in here and I

liked it(set down magazine)

Reflection: (laughs and picks up magazine flips through it )

No, you liked it on the model. (Sarcastically) And you

thought YOU could look like that.(points at picture)

Look at how it fits. Its way too tight in the waist and look

our b***s, They are nonexistent and don’t even get me

started on our butt.

Girl: (more to herself while finishing her makeup) well

there’s no time to change it now.

(Cell phone rings and Girl answers it)

Girl: (pauses between lines ,you are having a

conversation

on the phone)

Hello

Oh hey, what’s up?

Oh ok

Ok(let down)

Well feel better

No, No I’ll be fine (too fast you are actually really upset)

Maybe next time.

Bye

(Hangs Up)

Reflection: Told you so.

Girl: He’s just sick. (Pauses) (defensively) He’s not

standing me up

Reflection: I never said he was

Girl: well he’s not

Reflection: what ever you have to tell yourself.

He’s too good for YOU anyway

(Picks up magazine and reads from cover almost

mockingly)

oooooh 5 kisses that will blow his mind. To bad you won’t be

using any of them.

Are you still going to go or (mockingly) are you going to

stay here crying like a kicked puppy.

Girl: (indecisively) I, I ,I I’m still going

(Girl exits, and as she leaves Reflection speaks her line)

Reflection: (nastily) Have fun. (Count down on fingers

from

5 as if you know Girl is going to come back)

(Girl reenters room sniffling once Reflection reaches

about

two in her countdown)

Reflection: back so soon

Girl: (Quick pause then answer ) No, I’m just waiting for my

ride

Reflection: well they sure are late

(Awkward pause, should feel uncomfortable)

Reflection: I guess they aren’t coming oh well

(More awkward silence)( girl should be getting visibly

more

and more upset during the pause but is trying to hide it

from

Reflection)

Girl: No one likes me(not overly dramatic)

Reflection: and that surprises you, you’re not very smart,

you have no real skills and you aren't even remotely

interesting to look at. You are so pathetic that you can’t

even keep your date for the winter formal. I bet he’s with

Stacy, I mean who

could blame him.

Girl: SHUT UP, SHUT UP, SHUT UP, SHUT UP (gradually

getting louder on the last one throw something at mirror.

Reflection catches it)

Reflection: Well if you are going be like that (ducks down

and disappears)

(Girl sits rips magazine in half and cries as lights go

down)

  • Notes

  • Girl is less bothered by her Reflection in the

    beginning

but as you go on throughout the scene she gets more

    and more upset.

  • Reflection and Girl are the same person reflection is

just the voice inside of Girl, simply voicing the

    thoughts in Girls head.

Way too many stage directions!!! You're taking away from the play, directions like the notes in bold should be obvious by the dialogue and how well the actor can act. Phone direction should be obvious it's unnecessary we all know how to have a conversation on the phone and what it should sound like from one person perspective.also you mention the outfit twice in your entrance directions, if your going to say the girl is wearing a dress say it as the only out line, for example "(Girl and Reflection wear the same dress, Fits bad on Reflection but well on Girl)" try to use less direction remember it's less forcing and more persuasion with directions, make the actor want to make the direction exactly how you saw it in your head.but the dialogue was well written
