Chapter 2- Brey

Chapter 2- Brey

This is in Brey's Point of View

“What were you thinking about in class today?” Logan asked.

I shrugged and stared at the window, watching the trees zoom past us. “Nothing really. Just zoned out so I wouldn’t have to hear Mrs. B butcher yet another genre of literature.” We both laughed and I went back to staring out the window.

I looked at my arms, looking for the goose bumps that were there earlier today. I can't believe he growled at me. I can't believe he's real. Did anyone else hear him? Did I hear him. I could have been imagining things again. That wouldn't be a total shock. It's completely possible.

But you heard him. You know you did. You're not insane. He's real. He's real.

I sigh and look over at Logan. “Do you hear things?” Logan swung his head in my direction and the car swerved in the into oncoming traffic. Horns honked and we screamed as he righted the car.

“Do I what?!”

“Hear voices. You know, like...like a voice or something?”

He looked at me on the sly, giving me a once over before looking straight again. His hands tightened on the wheel. “No, I don't…..do you? Because you can tell me. It would actually explain a lot and we can figure something out, Brey. I promise.”

I was about to answer when a new scenario flashes in my mind.

“You need help, Brey. I’m taking you to the hospital!”

“No, Logan come on it was just a ques-”

“No, Brey, I've been ignoring it for too long.”

He drives up to the hospital and gets out. I try to lock myself in but all he does is unlock it with the key.

“No, Logan please! I'm sorry, okay, I'm sorry! Don't take me in there, please! I'm sorry! Logan, no!”

He drags me out of the car and big doctors with white coats and large needles come out and grab me, dragging me inside.

“I'm sorry, Brey. I'm only doing this for you.”

“Logan, Logan, listen to me, okay? I promise you, it was one of my stupid random questions, okay? Now please, please, tell them to let me go.”

He walks over to me. He smiles. He bends down and whispers in my ear “Goodbye, Brey. I'm sorry.” He straightens back up and walks to his car.

“Logan?”

He gets in the car.

“Logan, wait!”

He starts the car and pulls out the driveway. They start pulling me inside.

“Logan! Logan, please stop it!”

He’s gone. He's just driving away. He's leaving me here. Another person is just leaving me. Again.

“No! You promised! No, let go of me! Get off of me! Let go!”

They get me inside and throw me into a room. Simple bed, wooden cubby, big metal door. I never wanted to be in this room again. I have to get out. I stand up and try to reach out but they slam the door shut.

“No! Let me out! Let me out of here! Please, stop it! Stop! Stop! Sto-”

“Brey!” Logan's voice brings me out of my head. I look around. I'm in Logan's car. He's taking me home. Everything is fine.

“Sorry! Uh...no. I don't hear voices.” I force a laugh. “Just one of my random questions.” I look out the window. I look at my hands. I look at him. He's looking at me.

“Where do you go? In that...head of your’s?”

“Why do ask?” He sighs and looks back at the road.

“Because you're my best friend. And….you're only ever halfway here. I mean, wherever you go, it's real to you. I've seen you be happy, and then you'd just stop and stare. And when you come back you'd be sad. Or scared. Or any variation of that. So I wanna know. Where do you go?”

“Because you're really weird.” He laughs. And I laugh. And then we're quiet the rest of the way home.
