Chapter 1

Chapter 1

A Chapter by BookWorm

She was sitting in class, tapping her pencil against her desk, staring blankly ahead. I watched in amusement as her thoughts danced in front of my eyes. She was not the typical teenage girl, who dreamed of love and fame. No, she dreamed of battling dragons, of sacrificing herself for her family. Today was a good day. Her thoughts had a bright yellow hue instead of the usual gray or, which became more frequent with each passing day, black. I crept closer to her, and watched as the goosebumps rose on her arms, just as they did every time I got close. She always knew I was near whenever I got close. This was no feat, for everyone had the same reaction whenever I got close. What was surprising is that she spoke to me.

   “Go away.” She hissed quietly.

I chuckled. She was truly an amazing thing. An imagination so wild that she would take the most common things and turn it into something extraordinary. Of course, she was correct about me, and about many other things. But she could never know that. I smiled at her unknowing face. Even though that mind of hers may run wild, there was no way she actually knew that I was more than a feeling. I touched her arm and she shuddered. I held back another laugh. She was the only one I ever touched.

“I mean it. Go. Away.” She whispered to no one. We both glanced around to see if anyone had heard.

Her only friend, Logan, had heard her and looked at her with a smile. He was used to her whispering to the wind. This fact caused my smile to drop. For some unfathomable reason I felt entitled to her strange quirks. They were my amusement and mine alone. Then I remember that when she got home she would be pacing, ranting about independence and sacrifice. Screaming and fighting off enemies without making a sound. Re-enacting and reinventing scenes from her favorite books all while her family sat unknowing somewhere in the house. That was our secret.

“Ms. Walker, would you like to answer?” Her teacher, Mrs. Beitmann, called out. Brey sat up straight and attempted to rub the goosebumps off her arm.

“Uh…can you repeat the question please?”

“I said, can you tell me a modern writing of genre that is widely popular and yet little known.” The class snickered, and the yellow glow around her thoughts turned dull until it became a light gray.

   “Paranormal fantasy.”

“I’m afraid that is incorrect. Writing on the topic of paranormal events is very old. The legends of werewolves and vampires stem back centuries.” The teacher turned to call on someone one else, but Brey raised her hand. She didn’t wait to be called on.

“That is true. What is modern is the new take on angels and demons. Fallen angels falling in love with humans is old. Bible old. But the prospect of bad angels and good demons, of half breeds is very modern and very popular with teenagers who know of it.” She smiled and I couldn’t help but smile with her.

The teacher’s face turned sour, and her thoughts had taken on a fiery color, red and orange. The combination of anger and jealously was an unattractive color on anyone, but especially on someone older. And she was cloaked in it. I left Brey’s mind for a moment and peeked into the teacher’s. She was frantically looking for a way to negate what she said. She found nothing.

    “Very well Ms. Walker.”

“Way to go Brey.” Logan whispered. Brey chuckled quietly and then faced the front.

I peeked into Logan’s mind and saw him replaying the day in his mind. His morning went by quickly, as though he was rushing to get to a certain part of his day and it stopped, froze on the smiling face of Brey as she said hello to him this morning. His thoughts took on a dark pink, almost red color. He loved her. I tensed at the thought of them together in a romantic way. A bitter taste filled my mouth but I couldn’t understand it.

His thoughts turned and he saw them coming to school together, as they often do, except this time they held hands as they walked to class. They stopped outside her classroom door to kiss goodbye. I growled at the image, and Brey gasped, looking directly at me. My anger forgotten, I threw my eyes to her thoughts. They swirled around frantically, a million different theories being created before my eyes.

Imagination. Someone’s cough. Super hearing….heard a dog growl. Growl. Growl.

Her thoughts were an incoherent stream of explanations. She was still staring at me, and I at her, until Logan kicked her chair gently. We both looked at him stunned and a little irritated, but he just chuckled.

“You were zoning again.” He whispered.

She smiled slightly at him and shrugged, but her mind was still on me. She mentally flipped through every book, every daydream she’s ever had, in order to explain what she heard. But all she could think was: He growled at me.

I was so tempted to correct her thoughts, but it was too late. The yellow light around her thoughts dimmed until it was gray. She sighed, and the class bell rang. She gathered her things and stood up, nodding and smiling at whatever Logan was saying, but her thoughts were slowly clearing. The constant music faded, and the fantasies ebbed into the background. Why would he growl at me? she asked herself. All the while I was asking myself a question as well.

   How did she hear me?

Here it is! I think you just added it because i have been searching for it this whole entire time. This is really good and interesting, I like the yellow and grey color hue idea, very well written and that whole Bad Angels Good Demon thing is a nice twist, it kind of reminds me of Black Butler, but in all I cant wait for chapter 2
