    Paol

My second day at the went over a little more smooth. Viviana wasn’t at school though. Her brother got called out school during our third class. I’m starting to get worried a little.

“Paol!!” Rosalia shouts running into my room. She can’t exactly say my name though it sounds more like Pa-oo.” I think that its adorable.

“Hi Rosie!”

“Paol I miss the vinney.” By vinney she means the vineyard where we used to live. Mom and dad would always let her run through the grape fields. This cold houseless city is sort of strange we’re used to a big house and here we live in a very large brownstone. At least we have somewhat of a front yard.

“I miss it to Rosie but I kind of like New York.”

“Rosalia come here!” Mom calls her from the kitchen.

“Bye Paol.” She says frolicking off.

“Bye Rosie.”

My phone stars ringing a couple minutes after she leaves. I actually check the called I.D. this time it’s Jessie.

“What Jess?”

“Who is it? Tell me who?”

When she says who I know she means the girl I like. “A girl at school. Her name is Viviana.”

“You’ve been there for like to days. How could you like her?”

“I don’t know theres something about her.”

“There was something about me too you know.”

“There was. You’re right about the was part, but that’s the thing she’s not like you or any of the other girls. There is absolutely nothing for us now.”

“What ever Paol I gotta go.” She says annoyed as if I called her.

“You called me Jesse not the other way around. Bye.”

          “Yeah bye.”

“Paol DINNER!!!”

“I’m not hungry mom. I’m gonna go for a walk.”

“Okay honey don’t be gone to long it’s cold, almost dark and dangerous out there.”

“Okay mom I won’t.” I tell her coming down the stairs with my coat, and gloves on.”

“Your dinner will be in the microwave.” Is what I hear walking out of the door.”

There’s a mid thick layer of snow on the ground. Its white color is something I’m going to have to get used too. My mind is running wild thinking about Jesse and Viviana. Maybe Jess is right I’ve known Viviana for like two days and only seen her one. But there is this feeling inside me when I think of her or hear her name spoken. My stomach flips in circles.

I’ve walked what seems like five minutes before I realize that I’m like ten blocks away from my street, and I’m a little lost. I think I could figure it out though I pretty much just went straight. The house has a family of nine playing outside in the snow.

“Viviana Help!!!” A little boys voice cries out. He’s been picked up by a tall man and is being tickled. “VIVI!!” he cries again

“Here I come Alessandro!!” The girl’s voice yells back running toward him. She smashes a snow ball at the back of the mans head. He puts the boy down and goes after her.

After hearing the name Viviana I can’t help but wonder if it’s actually her. I come up with a plan in my head. I’ll pretend that I’m really lost and walk up to them. It’s sort of weak but it’s probably work.

On my way up the little boy notices me coming. “Mama, papa someone’s here!!”

They look to me and the father speaks. “Hello. Can I help you with something, and ask your name.”

“Oh I’m Paol Varela, I just moved here and…”

“Paol?” A girl comes walking over.

“Yes?”

“Oh I’ve been wanting to talk to you!! Thank you so much for helping me to the nurses office the other day.” She says suddenly hugging me.

I’m surprised at this. This girl looks nothing like Viviana, her eyes seem darker and her hair dark also. Although her hair is pulled back tight into her hat. But I know it’s her. “You’re welcome Viviana. I’d been wondering how you are.”

“I’m doing a lot better thank you. Papa this is Paol he’s new to school.”

“Oh well its nice to meet you. Were you lost.”

“Sort of yes.”

“I’ll walk him home papa. What street?” there is eagerness in her voice that can’t be hidden. This makes me eager too.

“Cherry.”

“That’s not far. Can I papa.”

“You could drive him.”

“Oh but papa its so nice outside for what it has been th past couple days. Pleeeeaaaasssse!!”

          “Alright Chiata, Alright go ahead.”

“Thanks papa! I’ll be back soon.”

          “Okay by eleven.”

“What time is it now?”

          “Eight thirty.”

“Cool. Oh I have to go get my cell phone and get out of these wet clothes. Stay here and play everyone I’ll be back in a few. Paol this is my whole family. This is my Grandma Carlotta, my mom Tessa, my dad Augusto. My brothers Leonardo, Alessandro, and Stephano you know already. These are my two sisters Mariabella and Lucetta.”

They all wave say its nice to meet you. I do the same back. They go back to their playing while I wait for Viviana. Someone walks up behind me.

“So do you like my sister?”

I turn to find the boy named Leonardo talking to me and awaiting my answer. “Yes she is very nice and pretty.”

“Well let me tell you something. If I ever found out that you’ve hurt her or made her cry. Or anything along those lines I’ll kick your a*s. That’s a solid promise.”

I’ve heard this from girls brothers before and even their fathers and cousins. But this time there is something more than just love behind his words. I believe them greatly. “I know and I would never do anything to hurt her intentionally.”

“You’d better not.”

“Leo you aren’t being a bully to poor Paol are you?” She laughs as she descends the stairs.

“Of course not Chiata.” He smiles at her. “Remember what I said.” He speaks to me as he walks away.

“I’ll be back soon Leo. By everyone.” Viviana says kissing his cheek.

She runs down the yard and to the sidewalk and stands beside me. “Are you ready?”

          “Yes.”

Shes wearing a different coat and clothes. Her hair is down to, she looks absolutely breathtaking.

          “Come on Paol.”

When Viviana says this I notice I’m a couple paces behind her.

“I’m sorry.” I say striding up to her.

“It’s okay.”

          “Can I ask you something?”

“Yes of course. What is it?”

“Why does everyone call you Chiata?”

“Mmmm I don’t know really.”

          “Really?”

“Yes really! I mean my mother loved both names so she named me both. So technically I Viviana Chiata is my first name. But instead of being called both I pass Viviana off as my first name and Chiata as my middle one, but my mother insist that people get to choose which one they want to call me.”

“I see. Can I ask another?”

“If I can ask the next one. Deal?”

“Deal. Well Ana my next question…”

“What did you call me?”

          “Ana.”

“Oh.”

          “Is there a problem there?”

“Well Stephano is the only one who gets away with calling me Ana.”

“Why.”

“I don’t know, I guess because we are so close he’s pretty much my best friend and always has been.”

“So it’s more of a pet name?”

          “Yes you could say that.”

“Well I’ll be sure not to call you it again.”

“My turn now!!” She doesn’t seem phased at all by my mistake.

          “Go ahead.”

“Well where did you move here from?”

          Napa, California.”

“Oh they make lots of wine there right?”

“Yes my family has owned a Vineyard there for a little over a century now.”

          “Wow that’s really amazing.”

“yea it was wonderful there…. And warm.”

“ Ahh your still getting used to the frigid New York City air are you.”

“YES!!! I don’t know how you do it.”

“Well growing up here your entire life as a pretty big part in it. But that’s hilarious you look cold.”

          “You don’t.” I state.

“I’m a little chilly but nothing that can’t be dealt with. Try being here when it’s below zero.”

          “I’d rather not.”

“Ahahaha!!” When she laughs it’s like no laugh I’ve ever heard before. “Well I love it here in New York, I could never imagine a winter or Christmas without snow. The snow makes me soo happy. You’ll have to go to upstate New York this winter it’s much more beautiful there.”

“If theres more snow I think not, but I’m trying my best to get used to it. I hope I do fast.”

          “Me too. Oh!!”

“What?” I ask worried but when I look at her all that’s happened is that she’s found a park.

“I love this place. I haven’t been here in forever. Lets go swing.”

“Okay.” I say sort of leery because it looks as if there is snow all over. “You know you’re a very happy person.”

“I promised myself I was going to have more fun. Life is much to short.”

          “I see.”

We play at the park for awhile and I’m having a lot of fun. On the way home again Viviana play an equivalent of twenty questions. By the time reach the house it’s only 9:45.

“Well Paol it’s been nice talking to you.”

“Yeah you to Viviana.”

She leans to give me another hug. I’m not taken by surprise this time so the hug is mutual.

“Bye Paol.”

I really don’t want her to walk home alone. I decide to invite her in for awhile. “Wait do you wanna come in?”

“Sure.” She gives me a smile that would put anyone’s to shame.

          “Come one.”

“It feels great in here.”

          “Your right.”

“Oh Paol I was starting to get worried.” My mom says walking into the foyer. “Paol you brought a friend what’s your name dear?”

          “I’m Viviana Giuseppe.”

“Oh your so pretty and such stunning eyes!!!”

          “MOM!!”

“Thank you so much Mrs. Varela.”

          “Oh please call me Jonnie.”

“Okay.”

“Come on your father and Rosie are in here.”

We walk to my living room and Rosalia is sitting on the couch next to my dad.

“Dad we have some company.” Viviana is standing behind me, I move so they can see each other.

“Hi Mr. Varela I’m Viviana.”

          “Hello there.”

“Who’s that Paol?” Rosie says to me.

“This is my friend Viviana, Rosie.”

“Oh.” She says her eyes wide wondering who this girl is. After that Rosie runs to me telling me to pick her up.

“Kiss me Rosie!” I say and she gingerly kisses my cheek.

“Hi Rosie.” Viviana smiles at her.

“Hi Viviana.” She has a little trouble saying her name, and looks a little disarrayed from the trouble with it.

“Aww it’s okay call me Vivi.”

Rosie’s face lights up. “Okay Paol I like her.”

“I bet she likes you too.”

“I do like you a lot.”

WE sit and talk for awhile it’s around 10:45 when Viviana starts to stand.

“I think that is should be getting home now.”

“I’ll drive you.” I tell her.

          “Bye bye Vivi.”

“Goodbye Sweetheart.” Viviana tells Rosie hugging her. “Bye Jonnie Bye Romeo, it was very nice meeting the both of you.”

          “You to dear.” Dad replies.

“We hope to see you again Viviana.” Mom says.”

          “So do I.”

We walk out of the door and to my car.

“Your family is very nice.”

          “Thank you.”

I like the format of this story. I like the feel of family. I didn't notice any errors. a very good chapter. A family trying to be normal and content in a bad situation. A very good chapter. I look forward to reading more.
