"Shields Down Captain"

Terrified.
Of lies and broken hearts.
Afraid.
Because I don't want to let you in.
Overwhelmed with panic.
Because you've managed to knock down my walls.
A barrier that I once thought was thick and strong.
The safety that took me years to create
Suddenly crumbles at your feet.

My heart
Encased in concrete 
Though heavy and cold
It was strong enough to beat on its own
But without you
It seems so empty.

Things I've hidden for so long
Seem to fall out
Whenever you come around
I feel so exposed
And I hate it.

I refuse to say 'I love you'
Even though my heart says it's true
I won't say 'I need you'
Even though something tells me i do.

So, this is my heart
And I apologize for the condition that it's in
It is used and ugly
But if you choose to take it
I beg you
Please, don't break it.
