WHAT MONEY BUYS

I love my rich boyfriend;

He buys me such nice things;

He really knows how to spend;

Gourmet meals and diamond rings;

He comes to call with roses, too,

And takes me to the best shows;

I never want for fresh and new;

What I want he always knows.

I miss my wonderful boyfriend;

He has moved on to other things;

I have lost my lover and best friend

To someone he gives sweet nothings;

He called to say that he'd moved on

To a lady who appreciates the best;

He had found someone to count upon,

Because what money buys can't last.

So very true. I found the first stanza very comical, as though it were mocking those people who do only get into relationships for money. In the end, it is sad that they lose the relationship if they actually did like the person and merely got caught up in the wealth, but I feel that this poem is more of a satire on these people and that they should get their priorities straight or they'll end up losing everything that truly matters. Either or, very good poem, well done.

Men are very practical and any appreciation received is an ego booster. It's such so sad when a beloved overlooks the most important things in life. Perhaps, all he needs is a sincere word of praise. Afterall, that defines love still.

Well, I'd say his money would have been better spent if he'd stayed with you, but that's his loss. Perhaps a boyfriend who's true is better than one that's loaded---do you think?

I agree with Cotoye. Money is necessary in this life but can't buy the love and happiness of family and friends. I like the contrast here, makes us stop and think.

The idea that the love of money cannot buy you happiness and love is very old. The same is true for rich parents who buy their children expensive cars, when spending a day with them would have been so much more cherished.

You're right- money can't buy you love. Sure money can buy you all the things you want, but not what you need. Everyone needs to feel loved. Diamond rings will make you feel special, not loved. Eventually they will become dull and scratched. A heart on the other hand lasts forever.

The spur of the moment, temporary. It's all the money can buy. Terminal happiness.

Money buys security, for sure, but little else of meaning.

Money is security, but we have not to forget that many women trade sex for money (benefits), also in marriages also in regular or loose relationships. In maths, however, real essences are known, since they are abstract ideas, constructable without reference to reality, in relationships are legislators personal need and the influence of public opinion. I liked how your poem parts, once brought into duality answered ethical questions and of course, I appreciated your flawless rhyme. Always a joy to read you. Excellent poem.
