A LATE BLOOMER

I walk across campus and I feel like everyone is staring at me.  I have lost most of my hair and the hair that I have left is white.  Some of the other students come up to me and inquire as to which class I teach; I guess, just because you are mature in years, you are supposed to know everything, too.  Their mouths drop, always, when I tell them that I am a student.

I awoke, one morning, and was looking out at the tree infront of my house.  Suddenly, everything became clear to me about my situation.

That tree had been covered with flowers, about a month ago.  When all of the flowers fell off, it looked like it had snowed.  All of the spent blooms had blown away and the tree had started to sprout berries.  But, there it was, a single late blossom.  How majestic it seemed there, by itself.  No single blossom had looked so radiant, when the tree had been covered with flowers.

Now, I have my reply to all of the inquiries at college, "I may be a little old, bud, but I'm a late bloomer!"

I enjoyed your story. Over the years I have had many older people, mainly women, in my biology classes. The oldest was a lady who was so old that she shuffled a bit when she walked, but she breezed right through the nursing program, passed state board exams, and practiced for several years as a Registered Nurse.

I really like this one, especially, about seniors going back to school or to a job if the need arises. Just because they look a little older maybe can't move quite as well as they used to doesn't mean they don't have a lot stored upstairs. LOL... THANK YOU. There are a lot of late bloomers out there I am sure.

Wonderful piece. ^_^
My grandmother recently graduated from college actually, and I am so proud of her. She had some trouble with this situation at first though. :)

This is lovely,I enjoyed reading it...it is true that great lessons can be learned from the nature around us just by connecting with nature and being one with the sound of silence...:)

It's never too late to go back, I guess...lol. Your allusion to the flower blossom was tied in very well, sort of comical in the end. Nice write. But you do get a bit unnecessary with your commas in some places.

"Their mouths, always, drop, when I tell them that I am a student." You actually don't any commas at all in this sentence.

"Everything, suddenly, became clear to me about my situation." You could change the order of "everything" and "suddenly" to make this one read more fluently, and cut dow on some of the comma usage, so it reads: Suddenly, everything became clear to me about my situation.

I like the analogy about the late blossom. Well written, as are all of your stories.

Yes, I'm thinking of going back to school and I shall remember this line as I strike up conversation with all the young people I never talked to when I was young.
