To Grab Hold of Yesterdays

To Grab Hold of Yesterdays

A Poem by Christina May Shanaberg
"

One of Mom's favorites, which was buried with my Dad!!

"

TO GRAB HOLD OF YESTERDAYS

Ah, to grab hold of yesterdays

And the joys that passed you by;

The days you found happiness, in many ways;

Can you catch them, if you dare try?

To only know, for a moment,

That you could hold on to "now;"

Just reach out from your torment,

If you think you might know how.

To look back and see the happiness that passed;

To see only joy upon each tear;

Why did you not hold on fast,

When you saw it coming near?

To travel backwards is not wise;

Only a fool worries about yesterdays,

But I can see it in your eyes;

You long for the past, in many ways.

So, take a tip from me,

My wayward friend,

Grab on to all the good you see,

Because every day comes to an end.

Called back into my mind, recently, along with a card from my mother showing Amanda Bradley's poem entitled "Always Have a Dream!"

Forget about the days when it's cloudy,
but don't forget your hours in the sun. . .
Forget about the times you've been defeated,
but don't forget the victories you've won.
Forget about the mistakes that you can't change now,
but don't forget the lessons that you've learned. . .
Forget about misfortunes you've encountered,
but don't forget the times your luck has turned.
Forget about the days when you've been lonely,
but don't forget the friendly smiles you've seen. . .
Forget about the plans that didn't work out right,
but don't forget to always have a dream.

Inside the Hallmark Card it reads, "May every dream you're dreaming, every hope and plan come true, and may every day begin and end with happiness for you!

From me: Remember that no one can dream our dreams for us and only we can make them come true.

And, yes, that's Jackie Chan's Senior Picture!

Somehow, the title sounds so much like a song title to me. The poem itself contains the elements of an elegant poem, smooth flow and pleasant rhythms. I could see why this can be someone else’s favorite simply because it has a true and touching theme with well-delivered lines.

I agree, this piece is definitely full of great wisdom. I think that everyone should be able to learn something from this piece. I certainly need to try to hold onto the good things in life. Anyways, this piece had an amazing flow, everything fit together perfectly. The only slightly constructive thing I have to say is that in the second line of the second stanza the semicolon should be outside of the quotation mark. But that is only minor...

Yes great wisdom in your words. We learn with age to appreciate the good and simple moments in a life. I like the poem. You are correct. We need to grasp hold of the good things when they cone to us. A well written poem with a very good story. Thank you.
