A Constable is Born

A Constable is Born

A Chapter by ChristianM

Elizabeth Jenkins was a lover of mystery and adventure.  She was contemplating a name for her newly born son when the first attempt on his life came.  The first of many that would find him throughout his life, eventually besting him.   Miss Jenkins resided on the third floor of Sundale Psychiatric Hospital, and one of the patients had decided to see if her baby boy could fly out the window, and be free of the prison that held them.  Surely, the patient said while holding her son out the window, the ward was no place for a baby.  The lunatic claimed angels would fly the boy safely over the facility's perimeter, where a horse and carriage awaited to bring him to his castle.  A constable from Scotland Yard was desperately trying to talk the woman down.   All the while Elizabeth Jenkins was still trying to come up with a name for the boy, unaware anything was wrong, her mind in a place only the imagination ventured to.  The constable inched closer and closer with each word that he breathed.  When the patient let go of the child, the constable made a jumping leap, barely grasping the newborn boy's left hand.  When Elizabeth had her son back in her arms, she knew what she would call him.  Constable.  Constable Jenkins.

It was five past two o'clock in the afternoon, and Constable knew visiting hours at Sundale only went until 4 o'clock.  His mother wanted to see him.  She rarely had days where she was lucid and sane enough for conversation, but since it had been four years since his last visit, he assumed it to be important.  The walk was a hour long trek, and that was if he managed to make the trip without incident.    Constable was in his sixth year of secondary school, and soon his education would come to an end.   Looking out the second floor school window, Constable saw a group of  boys standing guard over his bicycle.  A school gang Constable had rousted a week earlier trying to steal television sets from the electronics store in town.  The authorities were so impressed by Constable's handling of the break in they offered him a summer internship at Scotland Yard.  It seemed the gang was not impressed and by the look of their fighting stances and poorly hidden metal rods,  it appeared they wanted to hurt Constable.
