Goodnight My Dear

This poem was inspired by saying goodbye to my cat, Mittens.

Good night dear

sleep forever

and leave the world here

Here, let me close your eyes

and whisper I love you

as I start my cries.

I pick you up gently

your fur soft

as it lays against me.

I give you to my brother

he'll take care of you

as I go tell mother.

He carries your body away

so he can bury it

but I can feel your spirit stay.

You dug your way into our hearts,

even if you were a stray,

and that's why it's hard to part.

Say hello to the Lord

and I hope you meow

with the angel's harp chord.

All the while, I'll stay down here,

praying to see you again.

So goodnight my dear.
