We Fade

We Fade

A Story by Chris Kay
"

A description of death... that's the best I could do to describe this work.

"

We Fade

We’re strapped to a stretcher

Our arms and legs are bound

All we can move is our head

Four men dressed in white carry us forwards

We’re in a dark tunnel

There’s absolutely no light

But somehow the end of it…

The part we’re approaching…

Is darker…

We feel a numbness born at our finger tips

And it slowly makes its way downwards

To our hand

To our arms

Gently sliding down towards our chest

We wish we were panicking

We’re dying

Once we’re gone, we will never see

Hear, touch, smell

Think,

Again

We will cease to exist

The universe will cease to exist

Yet, those are logical arguments

And all we could feel is relaxation

A relaxation no rest or drug could parallel

Ultimate rest

Do we want to die?

Do we all want to die?

Is it a secret we keep from ourselves

Or a truth we repress

We don’t know, but right now we want to die

Fight it!

We must fight it.

We must live, for another day

We were given a chance to live

A chance to experience

Love, companionship,

And success

We can’t let it end now

We must resist!

We never gave up

We struggled,

We yearned for life and death

During our short journey

We never reach the end of the tunnel

Instead, everything fades

To Black.
