A Sad Story of Two Sides

A Sad Story of Two Sides

A Poem by Chris Atkinson

A Sad Story of Two Sides
Part one

That fateful night that we did meat
You voiced your future dreams
Expressing your ideals of life
And what your past had been
The torment that you spoke of
Prier heartache and deceit
I swore to you from that day on
Your heartache was deceased

Speaking with such honesty
Like we had known each other years
Declaring all our past mistakes
That made us who we were
It was obvious you were special
As I gazed into your eyes
Inseparable from that day on
Our love it came alive

They exquisite beauty that is you
I expressed it every day
You’re dazzling smile a gift from above
With eyes so stunning and filled with love
The sent of your skin
Shear contentment and hope
The feel of your body
Did never grow old

I would every day awaken
With excitement in my eyes
The warm curl of your body
Laying right they’re by my side
Darling soaly you were the source
Of all my hopes and dreams
The excitement of this unknown love
A fantastic, wondrous thing

So generous and so kind
Your heart was made of gold
You preceded each and every dream
Of love I’d ever known
I thought that then forever
These feelings would always stay
But confusion, hurt and heartache
Were already on they’re way

You said that I had given you
You’re lost hopes and your dreams
The things in life you’d never known
That previously were unseen
A love that was so blinding
It was impossible to shade
An immortal life of happiness
A love that couldn’t fade

It wasn’t too much longer
before it all went wrong
Your dormant side erupted
Like I’d never seen before
The things you once just called your dreams
More a reality they just became
So an appreciation was just left behind
For that love and life you searched to find

Part Two

I should have realised it at the time
But my love was blind to your disguise
When you have the things you craved
You let your guard just slip away
Your alter ego, it materialised
It was the start of the madness that ruined our lives

Out came your poisonous alternative side
A devotion and love lost deep in your mind
Your disregard and foolish pride
This new compulsion for vicious lies
Your shame now vacant with separated minds
She’s cast you dormant and hypnotised

My saddest day in a tortured life
Was the sorrow I felt when I gazed in your eyes
So deserted and lost just a stranger gazed back
Masquerading as you, like your face was a mask
I pined for the angel so lost deep inside
buried so deep like a fossil through time
The traits in  the people you claimed to dislike
Became who you were and a part of your life

Falling so hard I crashed through the door
Into the bitter reality and pain of it all
This truth that I’d searched so hard to find
Just left me demolished and broken inside
So shocked and distraught the tears couldn’t fall
My heart it just shattered and tore out my soul

It’s an irony of such cruelty
That love has caused this pain
A hurt and confusion that’s here to stay
This heartache I feel it grows every day
Karma’s vacated and gone far away
It’s me once again who suffers your mistakes
Paying for believing you were who you said
A dream that’s now rotten like the thoughts in your head

I should have known better
But I believed every word
Never once I imagined
You could cause me this hurt
Rose tinted glasses wrapped round my eyes
Blinded by love and your clever disguise

I know that too, your heart is broken
It’s plain to see your strain and torment
At least you’ve got yourself to blame
I never deserved this tortuous pain
You changed from an angel
To bad and then worse
One side of you my soul mate
The other a curse
I gave you a love and we created our dreams
In return all I got was a heart filled with pain

But the past it doesn’t matter any more
All our future dreams are dead, buried and gone

This one feels like a story being unfolded in front of our eyes. Part I flows flawlessly. Part II might benefit from chopping a few words here and there to keep with the pace. That being said this is an excellent write full of emotion and projects a strong voice of the narrator. Love is just so complicated, because people are complicated. Our pasts always affect the way we react to the present especially when the past is unresolved or lacks forgiveness. Thanks for sharing, Chris! This poem must be close to your heart as a true writer will write until they are vulnerable.

This is very powerful and the lurking of sadness from each stanza is remarkable. You really know how to invoke emotion to the reader
