Self Creation

There will come a time you must choose who you want to be.
The path behind you speaks of where you have been with the earth beneath
your feet.
Where this path will go is not simply up to fate, it's based solely on the
person you decide to create.
Have self-respect before the world walks all over you
Be kind because it costs you nothing-and what would you like others to do?
Be humble because it's the only way-and you never know who your next teacher
may be.
Be wise by learning from your mistakes-and don't let them prevent you from
being happy.
Be adventurous trying all Life's spices and experiencing something new
because in the end you get to be the best version of you.

I like your direction, I like the message, I like the idea behind this and has potential to be a hell of a piece. First issue is this comes off too literally and directly worded. Reads more of a list of life advice you'd see posted up on BuzzFeed than it does a poem. There is a certain lack of rhythm due to the unevenness of syllables and line length, and there could be punctuation usage which might help cut things down and help read it the way you'd want it to be read. Those are my two cents, do what you will with them. You have a strong idea, I'd suggest thinking about imagery and metaphorical language. How could you write a poem suggesting a lesson for life without it reading like a list of directions? I'd be interested in the result.
