Let Out Your Inner Viking

Let Out Your Inner Viking

Let Out Your Inner Viking

by Chris

The day now upon us and dreary eyes awake

Children rush to open their take

Tiny vikings pillage their presents

Savages who can’t wait to see what grandma sent us

With flailing arms and a blur of paper

It’s all about speed in this Christmas caper

Ignoring the tags and who sent the gifts

Eyes become focussed and adrenaline lifts

Games, Spongebob and even some socks

Getting clothes for Christmas, boy, that’s a crock

Buzzing, whistling and a cacophony of noise

Weary faced parents, tired from building toys

Smiles, giggles and out-right laughter

As each child plays with the toy they were after

Kids lay down with chin propped up by hands

Little minds  drift off to imaginationland

Grandma spends hours cooking and she’s up til late

And you can’t leave the table till you finish your plate

So, it’s a shovelful of potatoes and a fork full of turkey

And a sprint back to the toys under the fir tree

Mom and dad lean back with coffee mug in hand

Watching tiny vikings ravage the land

An explosion of gift wrap litters the scene

Chocolate in the carpet; well isn’t that keen

Pets cry out with glee and rush to our feet

Smelling the stocking with a bacon flavored treat

Frantic tails wagging out of control

Knocking down ornaments and mistletoe

All those hours and Saturdays worked

And Jim from accounting, that tight-fisted jerk

All of it worth it  to see one accord

And the beaming young faces of the viking horde

I wrote this poem at about Christmas time. I was trying to capture the magic in children's faces and the joy we parents get at fulfilling some of our children's dreams. I hope it makes you guys wax nostalgic.

Another excellent piece! I love how you capture the sheer joy and purity of children even while comparing them to barbarians- it's like the primal drive that leads to the "pillaging" makes them seem even more pure, because it is the simple joys they indulge in, rather than being caught up in the complex world like older generations. I think the poem has a great flow and rhythm, and it feels almost singsong, which is appropriate given that its subject matter centers around children. I think it's both charming and sophisticated and perfectly captures the spirit of children at Christmas.

The imagry in this piece overwhelms the reader and sucks them into this glitter paper warzone you have created. I like hiow you describe everything in this and at first it seemed akward but the motre you read on the more the descriptions seem to fit. A wonderful ode to christmas!

I miss the days when the family would gather together on Christmas. I like the story in your poem. The simple things in life we hold on to. Thank you for a outstanding poem.

Great stuff, I both love it and -- I confess -- loathe it. It is great to see kids enjoy themselves as you describe and it is great to be a parent and make it happen. But the real viking in me recoils from the iron routine of it all, wants to make everything different, to escape. But that is stupid. It is as it is because there is a beauty to it. Well captured, sir. I will now remember how I was as a kid with my cap guns n robots.
